담헌 홍대용의 연구는 기존 『담헌서』와 연행록을 중심으로 연구되었다. 다만, 중요한 텍스트임은 분명하나 완전성을 담보하고 있지 못한 문제가 상존한다. 이로 인하여 『담헌서』는 담헌 홍대용 연구의 출발점이기도 하지만, 오히려 장애물이 되는 모순이 있다. 때문에 홍대용과 관련된 자료를 다시 읽거나 뒤집어 읽는 등의 방법이 필요하다. 뿐만 아니라 새로운 자료의 발굴은 늘 중요한 전환점이다. 새롭게 발굴된 「담헌공행장」은 그러한 측면에서 의미가 깊다. 「담헌공행장」은 차손자인 홍양후가 집필한 것으로 기존 이송이 쓴 홍대용의 묘표를 교체하기 위한 목적으로 저술되었다. 더구나 홍대용의 가계 혹은 홍양후의 홍대용에 대한 인식을 투영한 것으로 본인의 의도를 김흥근의 인지도에 가탁하였다. 즉, 김흥근이 찬한 묘표명에 행장의 내용이 그대로 기술되었던 것이다. 결국 「담헌공행장」의 발굴로 기존 묘표명이 김흥근의 의식의 결과물이 아니라 홍양후의 평가였음이 새롭게 확인되었다. 또한 홍양후가 가지고 있던 조부 홍대용에 대한 평가가 어떠한 지를 분명하게 읽을 수 있게 되었다.

The research of Damheon(湛軒) Hong Dae-yong(洪大容) has been studied focusing on Damheonseo(湛軒書) and Yeonhaengrok(燕行錄). His materials, such as Damheonseo and Yeonhaengrok, are clearly important, but there is a problem that they are not complete. For this reason, Damheonseo(湛軒書) is also the starting point of Hong Dae-yong’s research, but there is a contradiction that can be an obstacle. Therefore, it is necessary to read the materials related to Hong Dae-yong again or upside down. In addition, the discovery of new materials for Hong Dae-yong can always be an important turning point. The newly discovered Damheongonghaengjang(湛軒公行狀) is meaningful in that regard. Damheongonghaengjang written by Hong Yang-hoo(洪良厚), who was his second grandson was written for the purpose of replacing the tombstone of Hong Dae-yong, which was previously written by Lee Song(李淞). Moreover, it was a projection of Hong Dae-yong’s household or Hong Yang-hoo’s perception of Hong Dae-yong, and he tried to raise his awareness by borrowing Kim Heung-geun(金興根)’s recognition. In other words, the contents of the Haengjang(行狀) were described as they were in the tombstone name written by Kim Heung-geun. In the end, due to the excavation of the Damheongonghaengjang, it was newly confirmed that the existing tombstone name was the evaluation of Hong Yang-hoo, not the result of Kim Heung-geun’s awareness. In addition, it became clear how Hong Yang-hoo’s grandfather, Hong Dae-yong was evaluated.
