거대한 사회적 현상에는 반드시 특정한 인지와 연관된 감정이 강하게 드러난다. 사람들을 결속하여 연대감을 만들고 이를 지속하게 하는 힘은 감정에서 비롯되기 때문이다. 5ㆍ18도 마찬가지다. 항쟁에 참여한 사람들은 특정한 인지/감정 속에서 공동체적 연관을 맺었다. 특히 시민들의 분노, 죄책감, 슬픔 등의 감정은 각자의 행복주의적 방향 속에서 공동체성을 더 강하게 했다. 서로가 서로를 위해 자신의 목숨을 걸고 항쟁에 뛰어드는 모습은 정동의 영향이 컸다. 정동은 여전히 그 정체를 명확히 밝힐 수 없는 ‘절대공동체’를 형성하는 핵심원리다. 나와 너가 분리되지 않았던 그 공동체적 순간은 정동을 끊임없이 증폭하는 과정 속에서 탄생했다. 따라서 해방 광주의 분열 역시 감정과 정동의 관점에서 바라볼 수 있다. 소위 항전파는 그동안 시민들이 흘린 피를 헛되이 할 수 없다고 외치거나 집회의 의례적 성격을 강조하여 투쟁적 감정/정동을 고취하려 애썼으나 생명의 소중함, 가족에 대한 걱정, 승산 없는 싸움, 시민들의 계급적 차이에서 오는 불화 등을 극복할 수 없었다. 그들은 절대공동체를 가능케 했던 감정/정동의 강도적 역치에 도달하지 못했다. 5ㆍ18의 감정/정동 연구가 5ㆍ18을 새롭게 보게 만들 듯 감정론적/정동론적 연구는 다른 사회적 참사를 이해하는 또 다른 틀이 될 것이다.
In a great social phenomenon, emotions related to specific cognition are strongly revealed. For the power that creates a sense of solidarity in unity and sustains that is caused by emotions. So is 5.18. People involved in the democratic uprising made communal relationships in specific cognition/ emotions. Especially, emotions, like the anger, guilt, and sadness of citizens, made communality stronger in the happiness-oriented direction of each person. Their jumping into the democratic uprising was greatly influenced by affects, risking their lives for each other. Affects are the core principle that forms an ‘absolute community’ of which the identity cannot still clearly be revealed. The communal moment in which I and you were not separated was born in the process of the endless amplification of affects. Thus, the division of Gwangju after liberation can also be seen from the perspective of emotions and affects. The so-called fight-back group endeavored militant emotions/ affects by shouting that they must never let the blood shed by citizens go in vain or emphasizing the ceremonial nature of the assembly; however, they could not overcome the issues such as the preciousness of life, worries about family, fight without winning, and discord coming from class differences among citizens. They did not reach the threshold of the intensity of emotions/affects that made an absolute community possible. As the studies of the emotions/affects of 5.18 make us look at it afresh, emotional/affective studies will be another framework to understand other social catastrophes.
