This study examines changes in motivation for Korean language learning among international students in Korea, using motivation charts and retrospective interviews. The results of the data analysis show that international students experienced demotivation between six and 18 months of living in Korea, but were remotivated in their third year of learning Korean. Newly discovered demotivation factors include advanced course topics in language institutions, difficulties adjusting to life in Korea during the early stages of studying abroad, taking online courses, and difficulties in learning two foreign languages simultaneously. Remotivation factors included communication with native speakers, improvements in learning conditions, and the use of out-of-class self-regulation strategies. The results of this study can be useful for programs that aim to predict and alleviate the demotivation of international students, as well as help them to remotivate.
