협동조합사상이나 운동은 사회주의사상의 조류 속에서 출현하였지만 그동안 마르크스주의자들이 주도하던 사회주의운동의 한 흐름으로 인정받지는 못해 왔다. 시장경제에 대한 인식이나 사회주의로의 이행방법에서의 차이 등으로 협동조합운동은 사회주의운동과 거리를 두면서 정치적 중립을 중요한 원칙으로 삼아왔던 것이다. 그러나 1990년대 이후, 한편으로 소련 및 동유럽 국가사회주의의 붕괴와 함께 사회주의의 본원적 형태에 대한 재고가 이루어지고, 다른 한편으로 사회적 협동조합과 같은 사회주의적 성격을 강화한 새로운 협동조합이 분출하는 상황이 전개되면서, 협동조합과 사회주의의 관계에 대한 관심과 분석의 필요성이 증대하고 있다. 이러한 상황을 토대로, 이 글은 협동조합과 사회주의의 관계와 관련하여 제기될 수 있는 여러 가지 문제들, 즉 협동조합은 사회주의사상의 하나의 흐름인가? 초기사회주의자들은 협동조합을 어떻게 인식하였는가? 협동조합운동과 사회주의운동은 각각 서로를 어떻게 인식하며 어떤 영향을 주고받았는가? 협동조합과 사회주의의 이론 및 실천에 있어서의 유사점과 차이점은 무엇인가? 대안적 사회주의로서 제기되는 어소시에이션론과 협동조합의 관계는 어떠한가? 등에 대해 분석하고자 하였다.

Cooperative thought or movement appeared in the tide of socialist thought, but it was not recognized as a stream of socialist movement led by Marxists. However, since the 1990s, on the one hand, with the collapse of ‘State Socialism’ in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the original form of socialism was reconsidered, and on the other hand, new cooperatives with strong socialist characteristics, such as ‘Social Cooperative’, are erupting, the need for interest in and analysis of the relationship between cooperatives and socialism is increasing. Based on this situation, this article analyzed various issues that can be raised in relation to the relationship between cooperatives and socialism, namely, are cooperatives a stream of socialist ideology and movement? How did early socialists perceive cooperatives? How did the cooperative and socialist movements perceive each other? What are the similarities and differences between cooperatives and socialism? What is the relationship between cooperatives and associationism which is raised as alternative socialism?
