본 연구의 목적은 최근 유망한 방법론으로 대두하고 있는 연결망 분석 기법을 방법론의 시각을 중심으로 소개하되 사회문화 분야 연구에의 접목 가능성이 특히 높은 의미의 연결망 분석의 적용 의의와 앞으로의 연구 과제를 제시하는 것이다. 연결망 분석은 철학적으로 볼 때 실체론이나 환원론과 대비되는 관계론에 입각한 방법론으로, 속성변수가 아닌 관계적 자료를 그 분석의 대상으로 한다. 특히, 의미의 연결망 분석은 관계의 ‘형태’에 주목하는 기존의 연결망 분석에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 관계의 형태 속에서 송수신되는 메시지의 ‘내용’까지도 분석할 수 있다는 점에서 의미 구조를 찾는 유력한 방법론의 하나로 주목받고 있다. 이런 의미의 연결망 분석은 특히 텍스트 분석의 한 방법으로서 적용될 수 있기 때문에 사회문화 교과 연구에 있어서 다음과 같은 유용성을 갖는다. 첫째, 기존의 내용 분석에서 주로 행해졌던 개념 자체의 독립성에 근거한 분석을 넘어서 개념 사이의 관계에 대해서도 분석할 수 있게 되었다는 점이다. 둘째, 기존의 내용 분석이 갖는 주관적 해석의 한계를 극복하였다는 점이다. 셋째, 다양한 연결망 지표 분석은 물론 집락 분석, 판별 분석과 같은 다른 통계적 분석 방법과 결합해 사용 가능하기 때문에 다양한 분석이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 앞으로 사회문화 연구 방법론으로서 의미의 연결망 분석이 가진 장점을 십분 활용하여 연구할 수 있을 것으로 기대되지만, 의미의 연결망 분석뿐만 아니라 연결망 분석 자체를 가지고 사회문화 교과와 연관되는 주제에 대한 연구를 할 필요성이 있으며, 나아가 연결망 분석 자체로 분석을 끝내기 보다는 다른 통계적 방법들과 같이 사용함으로써 보다 분석의 폭을 넓힐 수 있어야 할 것이다. 아울러 의미의 연결망 분석 그 자체는 어떤 새로운 ‘숨은 구조’의 발견에 불과하고, 그 발견에서 시작하여 의미를 해석하는 것은 연구자 본인이라는 사실을 명확히 인식하여 연결망 분석 결과를 이론 틀에 맞춰 해석하려는 적극적 노력을 경주해야 한다.

In this article, network analysis is introduced by theoretical and methodological perspective. Theoretically it is under theory of relation and methodologically it deals with relational data. Especially, 'semantic network analysis' which deals with not only forms of relation but also contents of relation is deeply discussed with examples because it's more useful for socio-cultural text studies: 1) traditional content analysis can analyze only substantial and independent words, but semantic network analysis can deal relations of words, 2) semantic network analysis can overcome researcher's valuing problem because its data is gathered through mechanically, 3) semantic network analysis can analyze with other statistical method such as cluster analysis or discriminant analysis. For further studies and development, 1) area of research had better be enlarged, 2) usual network analysis is also a good methodology to study socio-cultural themes such as juvenile problem, 3) other statistical method can be used together, 4) semantic network needs more theoretical discussion.
