교육시장의 개방과 대학 구조조정으로 인하여 학생 모집 경쟁이 심화되면서 적극적인 ‘대학 홍보’의 필요성이 커져가고 있다. 그 일환으로 내부에서는 경영 마인드를 바꾸고 외부로는 이미지 쇄신을 위하여 대부분의 대학들은 기존의 대학 아이덴티티(University Identity)를 리뉴얼 또는 교체하거나 개교 기념일에 맞추어 대학의 기념 엠블럼을 새롭게 디자인하고 있다. 대학 기념 엠블럼은 대학의 역사와 문화가 표현되어야 하며, 새로운 이미지를 창출하여 신뢰감을 줄 수 있도록 디자인되어야 한다. 대학 기념 엠블럼이 개교 기념을 자축하고 기념하는 역할 외에 대학의 주기적인 이미지 개선과 홍보 효과, 성공적인 개교 기념행사를 위한 이벤트 아이덴티티의 핵심적 상징으로서의 기능 등 대내외적으로 중추적인 역할을 하는 특수한 의미의 상징 마크라는 점에 주목하여 기념 엠블럼 디자인에 대한 중요성과 연구의 필요성을 인식하였다. 본 연구는 국내 대학평가 종합평가를 바탕으로 종합 순위 40위권 대학을 분석 대상으로 대학 기념 엠블럼의 시각적 상징 조형 요소를 분류하고 유형을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 시각적 상징 조형 요소를 선행연구를 통해 형태, 컬러, 타이포그래피, 소재로 분류하여 분석하였다. 분석한 결과 형태는 숫자와 그림 또는 문자를 결합한 조합형이 가장 많이 나타났으며, 컬러는 대부분 대학의 전용색상을 사용하고 있었으며, 타이포그래피는 가독성이 높은 고딕계열을 많이 사용했으며, 소재는 기념 연도의 숫자를 부각시킨 디자인이 가장 많이 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 대학 기념 엠블럼의 유형을 도출하였다. 유형은 5가지(숫자형, 상징물형, UI 유사형, 숫자형과 상징물형, 숫자형과 UI 유사형)로 세분화할 수 있었다. 가장 많이 나타난 유형은 숫자형으로 14개 대학이며, 다음으로 숫자형과 UI 유사형이 13개, 숫자형과 상징물형이 7개, 상징물형이 3개, UI 유사형이 2개로 나타났다. 가장 많이 표현된 숫자형은 대학 기념 엠블럼의 커뮤니케이션 기능을 강조한 유형이며, 다른 조형 요소보다도 숫자를 정확하게 부각시켜 기념 주년을 상징화하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 유형별로 도출된 대학 기념 엠블럼은 후속 연구인 남서울대학교 30주년 기념 엠블럼 개발 시 디자인 방향에 큰 도움 될 것으로 기대된다.

In addition to the role of self-congratulation and commemoration of the opening ceremony, the university anniversary emblem is a symbol mark with special meaning that plays a pivotal role internally and externally, such as periodic image improvement of the university, public relations effect, and function as a key symbol of event identity for successful opening commemoration events. In this study, the importance of commemorative emblem design and the need for research were recognized. This study classified the visual symbol formative elements of the university anniversary emblem and derived the types. Visual symbol formative elements were classified into shape, color, typography, and material, and as a result of the analysis, the combination type combining numbers and pictures or letters appeared most often, and most of the colors were used exclusively for universities, and typography was easy to read. This high gothic style was used a lot, and the design that emphasized the number of the commemorative year appeared most often. Therefore, as a result of deriving the types of university anniversary emblems, it could be subdivided into 5 types (number type, symbol type, UI similar type, number type and symbol type, number type and UI similar type). The most common type was number type with 14 universities, followed by 13 number type and UI similar type, 7 number type and symbolic object type, 3 symbolic object type, and 2 UI similar types. The most frequently expressed number type is the type that emphasizes the communication function of the university anniversary emblem, and symbolizes the commemorative anniversary by emphasizing numbers more accurately than other formative elements.
