Snow Falling on Cedars is a movie based on the novel with the same name written by an American novelist, David Guterson. Though the story seems like crime and romance, the movie focuses on the injustice of the internment of Japanese Americans during the World War Ⅱ and the racial discrimination against them. Ishmael Chambers, who has loved a Japanese American woman, Hatsue Miyamoto, helps Hatsue's husband, Kazuo Miyamoto, a murder suspect. Kazuo loses his land because of the internment, which causes him to fight against the dead and to be unjustly accused as a murderer. This paper attempts to explore how deep was the scar of the Japanese Americans' experience in the relocation camp. It also aims to examine the cruel racism against Japanese Americans by analysing the issues of the places and the eyes of characters and those of cameras in the movie. In contrast to the beautiful natural environment of the fictional island San Piedro near Seattle, Washington, dark places such as law court, Concentration camp, and the battlefields all seen in a variety of visual styles, bring about the crisis of ethenic identity. And the eyes of the people shown in the movie reveal the relationship between the ruler and the other as a victim. The movie seems to end up with the scene of reconciliation between two groups, but more impressive are the image of the dark places and the eyes of disdain and contempt.
