본 논문은 이상근의 오페라 ≪부산성 사람들≫(1985/1992)의 음악 특징과 극적 구성을 살펴보고 한국오페라사에서 ≪부산성 사람들≫이 지니는 의미를 고찰해보았다. 이상근은 ≪부산성 사람들≫ 단 한 편의 오페라를 썼지만, 오페라 장르가 지닌 특징, 즉 아리아와 레치타티보, 이중창과 합창, 춤, 그리고 무대 연출을 위한 극적 요소까지 분명하게 보여주었다. 무엇보다 극의 전개와 언어, 한국의 음악적 정서에 맞는 다양하고 유연한 음악을 선보였다. ≪부산성 사람들≫은 작품 착안부터 무대에 서기까지 부산의 문화적 자력으로 탄생한 부산의 첫 창작 오페라로 부산음악사뿐 아니라 한국오페라사에도 한 획을 긋는 오페라였다.

This study researched the genre components and musical characteristics of Lee Sang Geun's opera People of Busanjinseong and examined the musical meaning of his work in the historical context of Korean opera. Lee Sang Geun composed only one opera, People of Busanjinseong. However, he certainly showed the fundamental and essential characteristics of the opera genre in this work, such as arias, recitatives, duets, choruses, dances, and theatrical factors for the performance on the stage. In particular, Lee wrote this opera with a sense of flexibility considering the dramatic development, language, and Korean musical sensibility. People of Busanjinseong was the first opera created from the cultural resources of Busan from planning to performance and was a significant contribution to the musical history of Busan as well as in the history of Korean opera.
