본 논문은 오늘날 한국 기독교회에서 보이는 ‘가나안 성도’ 현상을 서구 기독교회가 세속화와 계몽주의를 거치면서 이미 경험했던 현상으로 파악하고, 18세기 세속화와 계몽주의 시대 한 가운데서 이러한 문제를 ‘사적종교’ 또는 ‘사적신학’이라는 개념으로 정립한 요한 살로모 제믈러(Johann Salomo Semler)의 신학적 입장을 고찰하는 함으로써 오늘날 ‘가나안 성도’ 현상을 역사적 맥락에서 이해하고자 한다. 제믈러는 세속화와 계몽주의를 통해 기존의 제도적 국가적 종교의 영향력이 상실되고 종교가 사적영역(private sphere)으로 주변화 되는 현상을 받아들이며, 여기에 부정적인 측면만이 있는 것이 아니라 양심과 자유를 위한 해방적인 측면도 있음을 긍정한다. 그의 ‘사적종교’ 혹은 ‘사적신학’은 단순히 시대의 반영의 산물 일뿐 아니라, 성서적 신학적 숙고의 산물이기도 하다. 더 나아가 신앙인 각자의 양심의 자유와 신앙의 자유를 주장했던 마르틴 루터의 종교개혁이야말로 제믈러가 주장하는 ‘사적종교’의 강력한 근거이다. 제믈러가 ‘사적종교’의 정당성을 주장했다고 해서 기독교 신앙이 가지는 사회적 책임성과 공공성을 도외시하는 않는다. 또한 그는 제도적 교회가 개인의 신앙의 성숙을 의미하는 ‘사적종교’를 위한 안내자나 교육자로서의 역할을 할 때에 제도의 긍정적인 의미를 부정하지 않는다.

This paper investigates the concept of private religion or private theology developed by the 18th-century German Enlightenment theologian Johann Salomo Semler and its application in the context of today's Korean Christianity, which is characterized by the phenomenon of the Canaan Saints. Semler accepts that due to secularization and enlightenment, religion has become marginalized to the private sphere, with not only negative aspects but liberating ones as well, namely, for conscience and freedom. His idea of private religion or private theology is not only a reflection of the times, but also a product of biblical theological deliberation. Furthermore, Martin Luther's Reformation, which advocated the freedom of conscience and the freedom of faith for each believer, forms the foundation for Semler’s claims regarding private religion or private theology. It is noteworthy that Semler’s ideas do not neglect the social responsibility and public stance of the Christian faith. In addition, Semler does not deny the positive role of the institutional church when it serves as a guide or educator for private religion, referring to the mature development of an individual’s faith.
