Veterans are the most basic responsibility of the nation and a source of patriotism that can even devote life to the nation. The Republic of Korea government has been pushing for various programs to repay the sacrifices of veterans who fought to protect the ROK during the Korean War. Nevertheless, the war veterans who risked their lives to save the country have pointed out that the programs are insufficient for them.
In this paper, I investigated the reality of the veteran’s policy of the Korean War promoted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Domestic veterans and UN veterans were analyzed separately. As a result of the confirmation, the veteran’s policy of the UN veterans, which is being promoted in terms of veterans’ diplomacy, was actively promoted, but the courtesy of domestic veterans was relatively insufficient. There was no national interest in POWs held in North Korea. And it was confirmed that there was a lack of support for POWs and their families who had escaped from North Korea.
Veterans’ policies should be promoted to impress veterans in Korea by raising the Korean war honorary allowance, providing the best medical support, and improving the veterans’ culture. In particular, government efforts are essential to repatriate surviving POWs and remains held in North Korea. In addition, special interest and support for the families of POW defectors are needed.
