본고는 워즈워스, 언캐니, 상상력의 3가지 키워드를 중심으로 낭만적 과학관을 재고한다. 본고는 언캐니를 프로이트와 라캉의 정신분석학적 해석과 돌라르의 과학론적 재해석을 통해 상징계의 결여가 사라지는 과도한 충족의 공포로 정의한다. 상징계의 구조적 결여가 욕망의 원인이라며 언캐니는 실재의 임박함으로 욕망이 과도하게 충족되면서 오히려 질식감을 유발하는 사태다. 이로부터 본고는 낭만주의 문학에서 과학과 상상력은 상호 언캐니의 유발자이자 해독제의 관계에 있음을 주장한다. 과학은 물질성에 고착된 실재의 환상으로 언캐니를 유발한다면 이때 상상력은 자기반영적 환상을 찾아 나섬으로써 과학의 물질적 질식상태를 중화시킨다. 상상력은 넘치는 자기반영적 환상이 물적 토대를 억압함으로써 질식감을 유발한다면 이때 과학은 세계의 물질성을 회복함으로써 상상력의 질식감을 중화시킨다. 실제 비평적 접근으로 본고는 워즈워스의 「서문」을 분석하여 시와 과학은 이상적일 때 즐거운 지식의 생산자로서 동반자 관계를 이루며 그 관계를 유지하는 조건이 삶의 결여에 대한 인식을 유지함으로써 언캐니의 공포를 삶의 역동성으로 개방적으로 수용하는 데 있음을 밝힌다. 이어 『서곡』과 『유람』, 그리고 일련의 단시들을 중심으로 언캐니의 유발자이자 해독제로서 과학과 상상력이 서로 적대관계부터 동반자 관계까지 다양하게 현상함을 특히 ‘시’가 어떻게 ‘과학’에 의해 보완될 수 있는지에 방점을 두고 살펴본다. 끝으로 본고의 융합론적 논지가 언캐니에 대한 로봇공학적 논의에 대해 갖는 함의를 정리한다.

This essay reviews science in Romanticism through the key words of Wordsworth, the uncanny, and imagination. Adopting the Freudian and Lacanian definition of it, I interpret the uncanny as a threat of the lack inhering in the symbolic desire of the subject being lacking, causing suffocation through a complete satisfaction of the desire. As science and imagination are twins as triggers of the uncanny by being fixed either to the materialistic dimension of the world or to the imaginary dimension of narcissistic self-love, so are they as its mutual antidotes: the uncanny of the former is counteracted by an imaginative flight of the narcissistic subject and that of the latter by the recovery of the materialistic sense of the world. I examine Wordsworth's view of science in his “Preface” to The Lyrical Ballads and read in detail key science-relevant passages of The Prelude and The Excursion and several short poems. In conclusion, by applying the thesis of this paper to the discussion of the uncanny in robotics, I present a short example of a dialogic convergence study.
