이 글에서는 소설 『토지』와 영화 <토지>를 중심으로 소설에서 영화로 매체 전환을 하는 과정에서 예술성이 어떤 방식으로 구현되는지에 대해 분석했다. 두 장르의 예술성 구현 방식을 살펴보기 위해 선택한 방법론은 ‘성(聖)’, ‘속(俗)’의 개념과 특징이다. 소설에서 형상화된 종교와 역사적 운동이 영화 속에서 배제된 연유를 이러한 두 개념과 특징 속에서 찾아보고 이러한 변화 과정에서 각각의 장르가 추구한 예술성의 구현 방식을 분석할 수 있다고 판단했기 때문이다. 소설에서 종교와 역사는 속된 세계에 속한 인물들이 삶의 정상성과 안정성을 회복하기 위한 구원의 방식으로 추구하는 성스러운 것으로 인식된다. 그래서 종교와 역사는 혼돈과 파멸의 시대적이고 사적인 삶으로부터 개인을 구원하는 중요한 요소가 된다. 그러나 영화에서는 이러한 종교와 역사의 과정이 배제되고 파멸과 절망의 인물 관계 중심으로 이야기가 전개되는 차이를 보여준다. 이는 1970년대 박정희 정권이 내세웠던 통치성과 그것이 가져온 사회적 반향 거기에서 비롯된 대중의 정서와 공명하는 것이었다. 영화는 구원의 가능성이 사라진 당대의 절망적 시대 인식과 공유하면서 인간의 보편적 삶과 민족의 문제로 이야기를 새롭게 창출함으로써 당대 대중의 삶과 접속하려 했다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 또한 당대 문예영화의 특성이었다.
In this article, focusing on the novel 『The Earth』 and the movie < The Earth >, I analyzed how artistry is realized in the process of converting a medium from a novel to a film. The methodology chosen to examine the artistic implementation methods of the two genres is the concept and characteristics of 'holiness' and 'secularity'. This is because it was judged that the reason for the exclusion of religion and historical movements embodied in the novel in the film could be found in these two concepts and characteristics, and in the process of these changes, the method of realization of the artistry pursued by each genre could be analyzed. In the novel, religion and history are perceived as holiness, which characters in the secular world seek as a way of salvation to restore normality and stability in their lives. Religion and history thus become important factors in saving the individual from the private life of an age of chaos and ruin. However, in the film, the process of religion and history is excluded and the story unfolds centered on the relationship between the characters of ruin and despair. It resonated with the public sentiment that resulted from the governance of the Park regime in the 1970s and the social repercussions it brought. It can be seen that the film tried to connect with the lives of the people of the time by creating a new story about the universal life of human beings and the problems of the nation, sharing with the perception of the desperate times of the time when the possibility of salvation disappeared. This was also a characteristic of contemporary literary films.
