본 논문은 문화의 보편적 메커니즘에 대한 유리 로트만의 이론을 번역의 문제에 적용한 연구이다. 번역의 과정을 문화적 메커니즘의 하나로 간주하여 윤동주 시가 번역되는 과정에서 텍스트가 어떻게 변화했는지 살펴보았다. 변화의 과정에서 새롭게 생성된 텍스트가, 원텍스트와 달라졌다면 그것은 새로운 의미의 생성기로써의 역할이 이루어진 것이며 이것은 텍스트가 사유하는 조직체임을 드러내는 것이다. 따라서 번역의 과정이 문화적 메커니즘을 잘 보여주는 사례라고 할 수 있다. 여기서는 번역자를 ‘경계’의 개념으로 두고, 번역의 과정을 ‘나-나 커뮤니케이션’으로 상정하여 새롭게 만들어진 번역 텍스트 총 네 편을 비교하며 차이를 살펴보았다. 윤동주 시가 번역된 텍스트를 영어 문화권와 일본어 문화권에서 각각 두 편씩 선정하였는데, 그 이유는 동일한 통사적 규칙을 가지는 언어 안에서도 ‘경계’라는 번역자의 해석에 따라서 텍스트가 다르게 변화할 수 있음을 보여주기 위해서였다. 특히 시와 같이 심오한 텍스트는 해석의 다양성이 무궁무진하기 때문에 같은 문화권 안에 속한 번역자라도 생각이 다를 수 밖에 없다. 또한 번역의 과정을 도상성, 공간성, 신화성으로 세분화하여 번역자의 머릿속에서 어떤 과정을 거쳐 텍스트의 변형이 일어나는지 짚어가며, 과정마다 발생하는 변화와 특질을 파악하여 로트만의 이론을 이용하여 설명하였다. 그리고 이 모든 과정이 번역자의 의식 속에서 나-나 커뮤니케이션의 형태로 이루어지고 있는데, 이 ‘나-나 커뮤니케이션’은 로트만의 주요 개념의 하나이다. 이 과정을 통해 언어 기호가 가지는 자질들과 기호가 모여 만들어낸 문화들의 속성과 상호작용의 원리를 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

This paper is a study that examines the universal mechanism of culture based on the theory of Soviet theorist Yuri Lotman. This course examines the process of translation, one of the cultural mechanisms, and applies theory to Korean literature. Considering the process of translation as one of the cultural mechanisms, we examined how the text changed in the process of translating Dong-ju Yun’s poem. In this paper, the translator was regarded as the concept of ‘boundary’ and the process of translation was assumed to be ‘I-I communication’, and a total of four newly created translated texts were compared and the differences were examined. The translated texts of Dong-Ju Yun’s poems were selected in English and Japanese culture in order to show that the text can change differently depending on the translator’s interpretation of ‘boundary’ even in a language with the same syntactic rules. Yun Dong-ju’s poems were compared between two versions in English culture and Japanese culture. In addition, the process of translation was subdivided into iconicity, spatiality and mythicality to highlight the changes that occur in each process.
