연구 목적: 모성성의 관점에서 토니 모리슨의 작품 『고향』과 펄벅의 작품 『새해』를 각각 검토한 후, 둘을 비교 고찰하여 유사점과 차이점을 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 방법: 먼저 모성성의 개념을 모성 개념과 비교하며 정의하였다. 모성성은 생명의 존엄성을 인식하고, 고통받는 생명에 대해 연민을 느끼며, 생명을 돌보고 살리려고 하는 행위를 뜻한다. 연구 내용: 『고향』에서 모성성을 실현하는 인물들은 백인 인종주의자들에게 쫓겨나고 우생학의 실험 대상이 되어 생명이 위태로운 지경에까지 처한 프랭크와 씨 남매를 돌보고 회복시킨다. 『새해』의 등장인물 가운데 모성성의 대표적인 발현자는 로라이다. 그녀는 자신의 남편과 한국인 여성 사이에서 태어난 김 크리스토퍼가 한국에서 차별받고 소외당하며 미래가 없는 처지에 놓인 것을 알고 미국으로 데려가 아버지를 찾아 성장하게 한다. 결론 및 제언: 『고향』과 『새해』에 보이는 모성성이 구현된 결과는 무척 다른 양상을 보인다. 『고향』에서 프랭크와 씨는 주변의 돌봄을 통해 회복하고 변화하면서 독립적인 존재로 성장한다. 반면에 『새해』의 김 크리스토퍼는 자의식적인 성장을 거의 보여주지 않는다. 본 연구를 바탕으로 앞으로 더 많은 작품을 비교 연구하여 모성성이 발현된 다양한 양상을 고찰할 수 있으리라 기대한다.

This study aims to examine Tony Morrison’s Home and Pearl S. Buck’s The New Year from the perspective of motherhood, respectively, and then compare the two to examine their similarities and differences. In order to proceed with the review, the concept of motherhood was first defined by comparing it with the concept of mother. Maternity refers to thoughts and actions that recognize the dignity of life, feel pity for the suffering life, and try to take care of and save life. In Home, the characters who realize motherhood are taking care of and restoring Frank and Cee, being driven out by white racists and subjected to eugenics experiments. Laura represents the expression of motherhood among the characters of The New Year. She takes care of Kim Christopher, who was born to her husband and a Korean woman. Knowing that Christopher is discriminated against, alienated, and has no future in Korea, she takes him to the United States to find his father. On the other hand, the results of the realization of motherhood shown in Home and The New Year show very different patterns. In Home, Frank and Cee grow into independent beings as they recover and change through the care of their surroundings. On the other hand, Kim Christopher of The New Year rarely shows self-conscious growth. Based on this study, it is expected that more works will be compared and studied in the future to consider various aspects of motherhood.
