이 연구는 설화 <구복여행>을 전 생애 발달심리학적 관점에서 분석하여 성인발달의 지체가 가져오는 문제와 성인으로서의 발달과업을 이루고 ‘어른이 된다’는 것의 의미가 무엇인지 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 설화를 통해 인간의 발달을 논하는 이유는 설화가 보편적인 삶의 문제에 대한 인류의 축적된 지혜를 담고 있기 때문이다. 설화의 등장인물이 발달과제를 이루지 못했을 때 어떤 어려움을 겪는지 살펴봄으로써 성인의 주요 발달과제인 친밀감, 경력 강화, 생산성 성취의 중요성을 확인했다. <구복여행>의 주인공이 가난한 이유를 정신적 빈곤으로, 서쪽으로 길을 떠나는 의미를 재탄생으로 해석하여 이 설화를 성인의 발달과업을 이루기 위한 일련의 여정으로 파악했다. 이 여정을 주인공의 자아실현에 국한해 파악한 기존 연구와 달리 과부, 주인 양반, 이무기도 각자의 발달을 성취한 것으로 파악함으로써 환대와 상호적 성장, 공동 운명체를 받아들이는 태도를 읽어낼 수 있었다. 또한 설화가 인간의 성장과 발달에 있어 오늘날의 삶에도 유효한 통찰을 제공함을 확인할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the folktale < Gubok eohang > from a life-span developmental psychology’s perspective to contemplate the problem of delays in adulthood development and achieving the development tasks as adults, furthermore, it considers the meaning of ‘being an adult.’ The reason for discussing the development of humans through the folktales is that the tales contain the accumulated wisdom of mankind on the problems of universal life. By examining what difficulties the characters in folktales face when they fail to achieve their developmental tasks, we identified the importance of intimacy, career enhancement, and productivity achievement, which are the main developmental tasks for adults. By interpreting the reason why the main character of < Gubok eohang > is poor as mental poverty and the meaning of going west as rebirth, the tale was identified as a series of journeys to achieve adulthood developmental tasks. Unlike previous studies that limited this journey to the self-realization of the main character, this study was able to read the attitude of accepting hospitality, mutual growth, and the community bound together by a common destiny by identifying the widow, master, and python as achieving their respective developments. Furthermore, the folktales have been confirmed to provide valid insights into human growth and development in today’s lives.
