한국불교에서 간화선의 중도는 목적론적 개념으로 이해하는 경향이 강하였으며, 상대적으로 수행론적 입장에서 중도를 이해하려는 시도가 많지 않았다. 본 연구에서는 간화선이 중도실상을 깨치는 것을 의미하는 동시에 그것을 증득하는 방식 역시 중도에 기반하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이러한 연구는 크게 세 가지 관점에서 시도되었다. 우선 선종과 반야중관학의 관계를 검토하였다. 이러한 논의를 통해 선종에서의 중도가 중도실상 자체를 목표로 삼을 뿐 아니라 반야중관의 방법론에 입각하여 중도를 드러내고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 간화선에 나타난 중도의 복합적 의미에 대하여 살펴보았다. 간화선은 중도실상을 직접 깨치는 것을 목표로 하는 것이지만 그것을 드러내는 방법 역시 중도에 기반하고 있다. 마지막으로 화두참구에 나타난 중도의 의미에 대하여 고찰하였다. 간화선이 복합적 중도의 의미를 가질 때 화두참구의 구체적 상황에서 중도가 적용되는 방식을 구체적으로 논의하였다. 특히 간화선의 화두참구에 나타난 방법론적 중도가 화두참구를 할 때 필요한 수행론적 특징과 화두참구를 진행할 때 나타나는 심리적 상태인 의심(의정)과 관련되어 있음을 논술하였다.

In Korean Buddhism, there was a strong tendency to understand the Middle Way as a teleological concept, and there were relatively few attempts to understand the Middle Way from a practical point of view. In this study, it was examined that the Ganhwaseon means enlightening the truth of the Middle way, and the method of acquiring it is also based on the Middle way. This study was mainly attempted from three perspectives. First, the relationship between Seon School and Prajnā-Madhyamaka was reviewed. Through these discussions, it can be seen that the Middle way in Seon School not only aims at the reality of the Middle way itself, but also exposes the Middle way based on the methodology of the Prajnā-Madhyamaka. Next, I looked into the complex meaning of Middle way in Ganhwaseon. Ganhwaseon aims to directly realize the reality of the Middle way, but the method of revealing it is also based on the Middle way. Lastly, the meaning of the Middle way in Hwadu Chamgu was examined. When Ganhwaseon has a complex meaning of Middle way, the method of applying middle way in the specific situation of Hwadu Chamgu was discussed in detail. In particular, it has been discussed that the methodological Middle way shown in Ganhwaseon's Hwadu Chamgu is related to the practical characteristics necessary for Hwadu Chamgu and Doubt, which is a psychological state that appears when conducting Hwadu Chamgu.
