중국에서 두꺼비는 고대로부터 인간에게 친숙하고 신비로운 존재로 인식되었다. 이러한 인식의 근본 원인은 두꺼비가 달의 精靈이라는 데에 기인한다. 원시 신화시대에 여신 항아가 불사약을 먹고 달에 가서 두꺼비가 되었다는 신화로부터 두꺼비는 달을 상징하는 동물이 되었으며, 달의 중요한 상징인 ‘영원성’과 ‘불멸’을 의미하는 동물이 되었다. 신화의 색채가 사라지면서, 두꺼비는 長壽의 동물로 인식된다. 그리하여 먹으면 장수할 수 있는 ‘肉芝’의 하나로서, 특히 세 발 두꺼비(三足蟾)는 민간에 그 영험함이 널리 유포되었다. 두꺼비를 보거나 먹으면 得仙할 수 있다는 믿음도 존재하였다. 달 속에 두꺼비와 함께 사는 계수나무는 두꺼비와 밀접한 관련을 지니며, 사람들은 시험에 합격하는 것을 “蟾宮折桂”라는 표현으로 오늘날까지 관용적으로 사용하고 있다. 한편, 두꺼비는 부귀, 재물과도 관련이 있는데, 대표적으로 금두꺼비는 사람들에게 財神으로 숭배받는다. 금두꺼비를 비롯하여 영험한 두꺼비는 세 발이 달린 두꺼비로 표현되곤 하며, 세 발 두꺼비는 신선 劉海蟾과 함께 다니는 신비한 동물이다. 명대 이후, 신선 유해섬은 세속적인 모습으로 변모되어 민간에 성행하는데, 세발 두꺼비와 함께 불사와 장수, 합격, 재물과 부귀를 상징하는 복록의 의미로 사람들에게 많은 사랑을 받게 된다.

In the primitive mythical era, the myth saying that the goddess, Chang-e, went to the moon after eating the elixir of life and became a toad was created, and since then the toad became an animal that symbolized the moon’s important symbols, “eternality” and “immortal.” In addition, the toad was considered a symbol of immortality due to the transformed appearance of Chang-e, who took the elixir of life in the myth, and the ecological habits of ecdysis and hibernation. As the color of the myth disappears, toads are recognized as animals of longevity. Thus, as one of Liuzhi that ensures a long life if eaten, especially the three-legged toad has been widely spread to the private sector. There was also a belief that seeing or eating toads could lead to the state of taoist hermit. The cinnamon, which lives with toads on the moon, is closely related to toads, and people still use passing the test idiom as the expression of “Breaking the cinnamon in the toad palace, the moon”. On the other hand, toads are also related to wealth and nobility, and gold toads are typically worshipped as gods managing properties by people. The spiritual toad, including the gold toad, is often expressed as a toad with three legs, and the toad is a mysterious animal that goes with taoist hermit Liu Haichan. After the Ming Dynasty, Liu Haichan was transformed into a secular shape and flourished in the private sector, and the image of Liu HaiChan was loved by people as a blessing symbolizing immortality, longevity, passing, wealth and nobility together with a three-legged toad.
