소리는 우리 사회의 젠더화된 면모를 들려준다. 수 세기 동안 구성된 다양한 젠더 카테고리와 통념들이 소리를 통해 들리기도 하고, 젠더의 의미가 소리를 통해 생산되고 재생산되며 수행되기도 한다. 이 연구는 사회와 문화 속에서 자연스럽게 받아들여지는 젠더 관념이 어떻게 소리와 음악, 예술 행위와 관행, 담론을 통해 드러나는지 살핀다. 먼저 소리와 젠더 분야의 여러 선행 연구를 검토하여 소리가 사회의 젠더화된 측면을 어떻게 들려주는지, 혹은 소리를 통해 어떻게 젠더가 구성되는지 검토한다. 또한 음악과 소리 담론에 젠더 의식과 통념이 어떠한 방식으로 녹아드는지 관찰한다. 더불어 소리 생산 주체의 몸과 필연적으로 결부된 목소리에 대한 다양한 접근을 통해 목소리가 젠더화되는 양상을 살핀다. 최종적으로 음악의 물리적, 육체적 특성이 젠더 통념에 따라 여성화되는 현상을 관찰하고, 여성 퍼포머에게 부여된 젠더 역할이 현대에 와서 어떠한 방식으로 해체되는지 그 사례를 검토한다.

Sound reveals the gendered aspects of the society. Various gender categories and stereotypes constructed over the centuries are heard through sound, and the meaning of gender is produced, reproduced, and performed through sound. This study examines how the concept of gender, which is naturally accepted in society and culture, is reveled through sound, music, artistic practice and discourse. First, this study explores how sound conveys the gendered stereotypes of society or how gender is constructed through sound by examining several previous studies. Also, it observes how gender consciousness and bias are incorporated into music and sound discourse. In addition, it analyzes how voices, inevitably connected to body, gendered through examining various historical and cultural cases. Finally, this study observes the phenomenon in which the physical characteristics of music are feminized according to gender stereotypes, and how the female performers’ gender roles are deconstructed in modern performance art.
