1958년 3월 27일 부산에서 개최된 부일영화상은 1973년 중단되었다. 부일영화상의 제정은 부산영화촬영소의 개소와 부산영화평론가협회의 발족으로 영화가 문화의 중심으로 편입되는 당시의 시대 분위기를 반영하였다. 부일영화상은 배우 입장과 개회사 그리고 시상식과 상영회를 구비한 작은 영화제였으며 영화도시 부산의 정체성 구축과 부산 관객의 구심점 역할을 하였다. 부산영화사에서 1996년 부산국제영화제의 뿌리는 부일영화상으로 볼 수 있다.
부일영화상의 성과는 1960년대를 이끌었던 유현목, 신상옥, 김기영으로 이어지는 거장의 발견과 윤정희, 문희, 김진규라는 스타의 발굴로 집약된다. 부일영화상은 1970년대 텔레비전의 보급과 영화제작 편수의 감소 그리고 국가기관의 통제로 인한(-와) 한국영화의 침체로 중단의 위기에 봉착했다. 부일영화상 중단은 산업적 요인과 더불어 박정희 정권의 낙하산 인사로 내려온 부산일보사 대표의 경영철학도 영향을 주었다. 낙하산 인사로 부임한 대표이사는 부일영화상을 이끌었던 허창도를 권고 사직시키고 부산일보 경영난 타개를 위한 사업의 구조조정 명분으로 수익과 무관한 사업을 폐지하였다. 1974년 부일영화상의 중단은 산업적 요인과 정치적 요인의 합작품이었다.
부산 영화 산업의 위축은 부산영화계가 극복해야할 시대적 책무였다. 부일영화상은 부산영화평론가들의 위상 회복과 영화 부산의 명성을 이어가려는 무의식적 산물로 여겨진다. 부일영화상은 부산영화의 선도성을 통해 실시한 축제가 서울로 전파된 문화확산의 사례이다. 부일영화상은 영화상이라는 대중문화의 축제를 부산에서 전국으로 확산하였다. 부일영화상에서 발원한 영화축제는 1996년 부산국제영화제와 이후 전주국제영화제, 부천국제판타스틱영화제를 비롯한 전국 단위국제영화제의 개최를 촉발하였다. 이는 부산에서 발원한 문화확산의 전형적 사례이다.
The Buil Film Awards(BFA) held in Busan on March 27, 1958 ceased in 1973. The establishment of BFA reflected the atmosphere of the times when films were incorporated as the center of culture with the opening of the Busan Film Studio and the inauguration of the Busan Film Critics Association. The achievements of BFA contributed to the discovery of masters such as Yoo Hyun-mok, Shin Sang-ok, and Kim Ki-young, who led the 1960s, and the formation of stardom represented by Yoon Jeong-hee, Moon Hee, and Kim Jin-gyu. The Buil Film Awards was on the verge of cessation in the 1970s due to the downturn of Korean films, such as the spread of television and state control. In addition to industrial factors, it is due to the management philosophy within the Busan Ilbo. The Busan Ilbo representative dismissed Huh Chang-do, who led BFA, resignation and abolished the project as a cause of restructuring the project to overcome the Busan Ilbo's management difficulties. The cessation of BFA in 1973 was the result of a combination of industrial and political factors.
BFA is regarded as the unconscious product of the restoration of the status of Busan film critics and continuing the reputation of ‘Cinema, Busan’. BFA is noted as an example of cultural diffusion that a festival held with an indifferent identity spread to Seoul. BFA spread a popular cultural festival called Film Awards from Busan to Global world. This is the typical example of cultural diffusion that originated in Busan.
