본고는 봉준호 감독의 통역사 샤론 최(Sharon Choi)의 통역 양상을 체계기능언어학적 관점에서 분석하였다. 샤론 최는 통역 전문가가 아님에도 불구하고 언어의 뉘앙스를 잘 살린 완벽한 통역으로 세계적인 주목을 받은 바 있다. 이에 샤론 최가 어떻게 봉준호 감독의 한국어를 영어로 통역하였는지를 체계적으로 비교하고 분석해 본다면, 바람직한 통역의 방향이 무엇인지 엿볼 수 있을 것으로 기대하였다. 분석 결과, 샤론 최는 세 가지 대기능에 변화를 주어 봉준호 감독의 숨은 의도를 언어로 표면화시켰고, 원천 언어의 뉘앙스를 목표 언어의 특성에 맞게 전달하였으며, 그가 말하는 메시지의 핵심을 오히려 더 깔끔하고 명료하게 표현한 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 그녀가 봉준호 감독의 문장을 완벽히 기억하고 그것을 영어로 옮겨내는 것이 아니라, 그의 말을 완벽히 이해하고 파악한 뒤 자신이 이해한 바를 최대한 의미의 손실 없이 정리해서 전달하고자 노력한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

This paper analyzed the interpretation patterns of Sharon Choi, who worked as an interpreter for the director Bong Joon-ho, from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics. Sharon Choi, though not a professional interpreter, has received worldwide attention as a perfect interpreter, as someone who can make good use of the nuance of language. Therefore, through this study, we expected to gain a glimpse of a desirable direction for interpretation by systematically comparing and analyzing how Sharon Choi interpreted the director Bong Joon-ho's Korean into English. As a result, the analysis revealed that Sharon Choi changed the three metafunctions to make the director Bong Joon-ho’s hidden intentions surface in a form of language, successfully conveyed the nuance of the source language, while keeping the characteristics of the target language, and expressed the core messages more neatly and clearly. It can be seen that when translating, she did not just memorize what the director said and then put it exactly into English. Rather she tried to grasp a full understanding of what he said, reorganize it and then convey what she understood without losing the original meanings.
