이 글은 음양과 오행의 相關性을 기하학적으로 究明해 보고, 오행 속에 내재된 ‘調和의 구체적 의미’를 살펴본 것이다. 음양과 오행은 ‘음양오행’이란 말로 자주 쓰일 만큼 서로 밀접해 보이지만 양쪽이 어떤 관계에 있는지는 명확하지 않다. 周敦頤와 朱熹는 음양에서 오행이 나온다면서도 그 이유는 말하지 않았다. 주돈이는 “오행은 하나의 음양이다[五行一陰陽也]” 라고 했으나 근거는 밝히지 않았다. 주희 역시 음양과 오행의 차이를 묻는 제자들의 질문에 “이치는 같다”면서도 자세한 답을 하지 않았다. 음양과 오행의 상관성은 數와 관련된 문제여서 오늘날 수학 전공자들은 집합 행렬 등을 통해 이 문제를 엄밀하게 설명할 수 있다. 이런 수학적 방법을 알 수 없던 과거에는 이 문제를 추상적으로 이해하는 수밖에 없었고 면밀한 설명이 어려웠을지 모른다. 본고는 일반적 이해가 가능한 수준에서 수와 기하의 방법으로 음양과 오행의 상관성 규명을 시도하였다. 음양오행은 數에만 그치는 개념은 아니다. 2000년 이상 동양사회를 지배한 사상이며, 宋代 이후 수백 년간 동양철학의 주류였던 성리학이 학문적 기초로 삼았던 이론이었다. 20세기 초 현대물리학자 닐스 보어가 兩立不可의 모순적인 물리현상을 이해하는 데 동원된 이론은 음양론이다. 본고는 3가지를 밝히고자 했다. 첫째, 음양과 오행의 상관성 규명을 통해 음양은 ‘[사물] 構成의 음양원리’이고 오행은 ‘關係의 음양원리’ 임을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 오행에서 만물로 퍼진다는 주희의 주장은 바둑판 원리로 검증할 수 있다. 셋째, 조직[집단]에서 調和란 ‘개체별 균형과 전체적 균형을 동시에 이룬 상태’ 라고 定義할 수 있다.

This study set out to investigate the correlations of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements geometrically and examine the "meanings of harmony" inherent in the Five Elements. Although Yin-Yang and the Five Elements are often combined together in "Yin-Yang · Five Elements," there are no clear relations demonstrated between them. Zhou Dunyi and Zhu Xi maintained that the Five Elements should come from Yin-Yang without offering any grounds for their argument. In his Taiji Tu Shuo, Zhou Dunyi stated that "The Five Elements are part of Yin-Yang," but he provided no grounds for his remark. Today relations between Yin-Yang and the Five Elements can be explained in a strict and specific way with modern mathematics including geometry and matrix. In the past when there was no knowledge of such mathematical methods, the only way to understand relations between Yin-Yang and the Five Elements was abstract, which raises the possibilities of understanding the Five Elements insufficiently. Yin-Yang · Five Elements is one of the essential concepts to explain Oriental ideas, and there are big differences in academic treatments and perceptions between Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. One of the causes might be a lack of understanding of the Five Elements. The present study was intended to broaden the understanding of Yin-Yang · Five Elements and especially the Five Elements even a little bit in a geometric approach. The present study had three main findings: [1] "Correlations between Yin-Yang and the Five Elements" do not represent their relations as they exist independently from each other. They refer to "intrinsic correlations" derived from the Yin-Yang rule of win-win conflicts inside the Five Elements; [2] Zhu Xi's argument that the Five Elements should spread to all things in the universe can be tested with the go board principle; and [3] "Harmony" of an organization[group] can be defined as the "simultaneous achievement of balance at each individual[member] level and the balance of the entire organization." The Five Elements make the only system capable of achieving this state.
