본고는 《申報》창간 후 초기에 해당하는 1872년 6월부터 이듬해 2월까지 투고 게재된 다섯 편의 평론 문장(<戲園雜談>·<戲館瑣談>·<觀劇小記>·<觀劇書所見>·<戲劇閑評>)을 통해 당시 上海 최고의 京劇戲園이었던 丹桂茶園과 金桂軒의 공연 상황을 고찰하였다. 저자들은 직접 체험한 두 희원의 공연 모습과 소속 배우들이 펼친 연기에 대해 신문에 게재되는 문장의 특성을 살려 간결하면서도 꾸밈없이 분명한 관점으로 평가를 하고 있다. 따라서 다섯 편의 문장은 당시 丹桂茶園과 金桂軒의 실제 공연 모습을 고찰할 수 있는 중요한 사료적 가치를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있다.

This paper examines five dramatic criticisms published in the early 《Shenbao》during the period from June 1872 to February 1873. These reviews are the <戲園雜談>·<戲館瑣談>·<觀劇小記>·<觀劇書所見>·<戲劇閑評> and they represent the earliest criticisms of the Shanghai’s Peking Opera published in a modern Chinese newspaper. As the title suggests, the authors attempted to deliver to the readers a lively and realistic description about the performances of Shanghai theaters; ‘DanguiChayuan, Jinguixuan’. Although the reviews are not lengthy, they succeed to depict the viewpoint of the authors in a clear and straight-forward manner, without any embellishments or exaggerations. In addition, they contain the impressions and evaluations of performances on part of the authors, which shows that they exhibit so-called “timelessness” and “informativity” which characterize modern-day reviews. These findings lead us to suggest that the five reviews discussed in the paper have historical value in examining the performances of ‘DanguiChayuan, Jinguixuan’ at the time.
