선우환 교수는 최근 그의 책에서 설명적 유관성에 대한 반사실적 의존성 분석을 제안한다. 선우환 교수의 분석에 의하면, 반사실적 의존성은 설명적 유관성을 위한 필요조건이며 충분조건이다. 선점 사례와 형이상학적 설명 사례는 각각 이 두 주장에 대한 잠재적 반례가 된다. 선우환 교수는 언어적 직관을 세심히 선별하고 기존 가능세계 이론의 틀을 수정함으로써 두 잠재적 반례가 그의 분석에 문제가 되지 않음을 보이려 한다. 이 글에서 필자는 두 잠재적 위협으로부터 반사실적 의존성 분석을 옹호하려는 선우환 교수의 대응을 면밀히 검토하고 그 대응이 성공적이지 않음을 논증한다.

Professor Hwan Sunwoo has recently offered a counterfactual analysis of explanatory relevance, according to which counterfactual dependence is necessary, and sufficient, for explanatory relevance. The case of preemption and the case of metaphysical explanation put the analysis into potential jeopardy as the two cases appear to be a counterexample to the necessity and the sufficiency of counterfactual dependence to explanatory relevance. In defense of his analysis, Professor Sunwoo argues that these potential counterexamples are not really counterexamples, appealing to linguistic intuitions and revising the standard possible worlds framework. In this paper, I bring his defense under critical scrutiny and argue that it is not successful.
