선우환 교수(이하 선우환)는 최근에 출판된 책에서 “때문에”의 의미에 대한 흥미로운 철학적 연구를 제시했다. 필자는 그의 연구가 철학적인 주목을 받을 충분한 가치가 있다고 생각하며 그의 이론이 흔히 “설명 이론”이라고 불리는 철학적 영역에서 훌륭한 토론의 자양분이 될 수 있을 것으로 믿는다. 필자는 여기서의 작업이 선우환의 작업과 관련한 철학계의 토론을 활성화할 것을 기대하면서 이 논문을 쓴다.

Recently, H. Sunwoo proposed a theory of "because" which might be called "the simple counterfactual dependence theory". In this paper, I argue that his theory of because cannot replace what is traditionally called "theory of explanation" and cannot provide a minimal requirement of explanatory relevance relation either.
