『전원일기』는 한국 드라마의 역사에서 최장수 드라마로 22년간 1088편이 제작되었다. 양촌리 김 회장 일가를 중심으로 한 『전원일기』는 차범석이 1회부터 49회까지 가운데 4편을 제외한 45편의 대본을 썼다. 최근 케이블 TV와 OTT 채널을 통해 『전원일기』를 향유했던 5, 60대의 당시 시청자들뿐만 아니라 지금의 젊은 시청자들까지 『전원일기』에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 『전원일기』는 농촌을 떠나 도시로 이주한 사람들과 도시에서 살고있는 사람들에 이르기까지 공간과 시대를 넘어서 공감을 일으키고 있는 이유를 파악하고 분석하기 위해서는 초기 『전원일기』의 탄생 배경과 초기의 작품들을 살펴보아야만 했다. 그러나 초창기의 영상들은 MBC 아카이브에도 보관되어 있지 않고 기록들에 오류도 많아 당시 신문의 편성표와 목포문학관 차범석 관에서 소장하고 있는 대본들과 비교하여 바로 잡았고 대강의 내용도 정리했다.
『전원일기』의 첫 회에서 차범석은 형식상의 포맷을 정립, 그 진행방식은 『전원일기』의 특성이 되었다. 드라마에서 잘 사용하지 않는 나레이션을 극의 시작과 끝에 배치해 안정감을 주고 농촌에서 일어나는 이농, 가족 간의 갈등, 보리 수매가, 수입 소고기, 농약의 과다 사용, 농촌 청년의 결혼 문제, 입양 문제 등등을 다루었다. 그러나 농촌의 실상을 적나라하게 보여주지 못하고 농촌 문제에 대해 나이브하게 접근했다는 지적과 농촌 드라마이면서도 농민을 위한 드라마가 아니라 도시인을 위한 것이라는 이야기를 듣기도 했다. 하지만 본래 『전원일기』가 잔잔한 한 편의 수필 같은 드라마를 지향했기 때문에 갈등의 극대화 대신 “갈등의 잔해”를 남기지 않는 드라마라는 자신의 정체성을 확고히 가질 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 최장수 드라마로서 한국 TV 드라마 역사에서 자신의 위치를 점할 수 있었다. 그 기반이 『전원일기』 초기 차범석의 대본을 통해 마련되었다고 할 수 있으며 이후 『전원일기』 22년간 긴 여정의 원동력이 되었던 것이다.
Junwonilki is the longest drama in the history of Korean TV dramas, with a total of 1088 episodes produced over the course of 22 years. Cha Bum-Suk wrote scripts for 45 episodes from the first episode through the forty-ninth. Recently, in addition to the original viewers of the series, younger generations’ interest in Junwonilki is growing through exposures on cable TV and OTT channels. In order to analyze how Junwonilki resonates with different generations, I have looked at the background of the creation of Junwonilki as well as early episodes. Many early episodes were, however, lost and not found even in the MBC Archive, and remaining records were erroneous. I compared the newspaper TV guides at the time and the scripts kept in Cha Bum-Suk Gwan of Mok Po Literature Museum to correct the erroneous records and organize the general content.
In the first episode of Junwonilki, Cha Bum-Suk established a broad format which became a unique characteristic of the series. Cha Bum-Suk placed narration, which was rarely used in TV series, at the beginning and the end of an episode to develop stability; subject matters such as rural exodus, familial conflicts, problems around purchasing price of barley and imported beef, overuse of agricultural chemicals, rural youth’s marriage and adoption issue were covered. There were criticisms against the series claiming it was a naive approach to issues in rural areas which failed to accurately depict the reality in rural areas and that it was created for urbanites rather than for rural people although it was a rural drama. However, Junwonilki was designed to be a peaceful, essay-like drama. This directing point allowed the series to constitute an identity as a drama without the “remains of conflict” instead of maximizing conflicts and to establish its distinct position in the history of Korean TV dramas as the longest-running. It is reasonable to say that early episodes written by Cha Bum-Suk provided the foundation for the series’ success as well as the motivation for the 22 years of journey of Junwonilki.
