This paper suggests the possibility of making a simple program for class discussion. Writing discussion notes on topics, which helps students improve their writing and debating skills, fail to produce an educational impact if the number of topics, as well as the size of the class, is not restricted. In that case, a chatbot system, which allows instructors to know if the discussion notes are properly written, can be a good assistant for the purposes of class discussion. Creating an automated system, however simple, is inconceivable to those who do not have a deep understanding of natural language processing, but a chatbot is easy to build on several online development platforms. While showing how to create a chatbot to send significant responses to each sentence of discussion notes, this paper examines the chatbot’s reliability by using two questions about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and then demonstrates that the simple chatbot system is a reliable device for class discussion.
