『扎根』은 많은 문학평론가들에게 높은 평가를 받기도 했지만 한둥 자신에게도 적지 않은 의미를 지니고 있다. 이 작품은 문혁 시기에 쑤베이(蘇北) 농촌으로 하방된 라오타오 가족의 ‘扎根’을 둘러싼 가족 생활사에서부터 가족 구성원 개인별 내력과 개성특징, 농촌지역 간부와 농민 그리고 남녀 지식청년들, 하방 노동자, 도망갔다 끌려온 부농과 그 가족, 심지어 길렀던 애완견들까지 세세하게 담아냈다. 소설 속 문혁 시기 중의 다양한 생활 풍경과 인물 그리고 에피소드는 모두 작가의 어린 시절 단편적 기억들의 조합 결과이다. 한둥은 그 기억의 끈을 잡고 영원한 마음의 고향이 된 ‘싼위’의 모든 것을 그려냈다. ‘扎根’은 시대적·정치적·문화적 요구였지만, 라오타오 가족의 생활 모습과 관념에서 볼 때, 요원하기만 했다. 그런 까닭에 싼위에서의 ‘扎根’은 실패로 돌아갈 수밖에 없었다. 다만 ‘扎根’은 샤오타오의 꿈속에서나 구현되었다고나 할까. 이는 다분히 그것에 대한 반어적 함의로도 볼 수 있다. 한둥이『扎根』에서 드러내고자 했던 것은 사실상 ‘扎根’의 지난함과 어이없음 등으로도 볼 수 있지만, 그 과정 속에서 노출된 문혁 시기 삶 자체에 대한 진실성을 간과할 수도 없다. 이것이 어쩌면 작가가 그 시기와 공간 속에서 살아갔던 다양한 인물들의 삶과 아릿한 추억을 애써 되살렸던 궁극적 목적이었을 것이기 때문이다.

For this reason, the ‘扎根’ in Sanyu had no choice but to return to failure. However, it can be said that ‘扎根’ was realized only in Xiao Tao’s dream. This can also be seen as an ironic implication of it. What he wanted to reveal in Handongi’s 『扎根』 can be seen as the absurdity and absurdity of ‘扎根’, but one cannot overlook the truth about life itself during the cultural revolution exposed in the process.
