본고는 정홍명(鄭弘溟)의 『기암집(畸庵集)』에 수록된 산문(散文)을 고찰한 것이다. 지금까지는 정홍명의 산문 중 일부 작품들을 대상으로 하여 연구가 이루어졌으나, 이번 『기암집』 완역을 계기로 정홍명의 산문에 대한 본격적인 연구가 가능해졌다. 이에 본고에서는 우선 『기암집』 권9~권12에 수록된 산문의 내용을 상세히 소개하였다.
다음으로 정홍명 산문의 특징 및 그 산문 이론을 고찰하였다. 정홍명은 진한고문파(秦漢古文派)로 분류할 수 있으며, 그의 문학에는 『장자(莊子)』와 한유(韓愈)가 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 할 수 있다. 중요한 것은 정홍명이 『장자』와 한유를 무조건적으로 모방한 게 아니라, 그것들이 그의 산문 속에 자연스럽게 녹아들면서 적절하게 변용되고 있다는 사실이다.
『기암집』에는 정홍명의 산문 이론을 확인할 수 있는 글이 다수 실려 있다. <문이대강변(文以代降辨)>, 책문(策問), <여조선술논문서(與趙善述論文書)> 등이 그것인데, 이 글들에서 정홍명은 한중(韓中) 산문사, 문체의 난이(難易), 올바른 문장 등에 대한 자신의 견해를 피력하였다. 정홍명의 산문 이론은 한유의 산문 이론에서 큰 영향을 받았는데, 다양한 문체에 대한 작문 능력을 뜻하는 ‘부전일능(不專一能)’, 내용 전달에 적합한 표현의 사용을 의미하는 ‘각식기직(各識其職)’ 등이 그것이다. 많이 쌓고 적게 드러낸다는 ‘다적박발(多積薄發)’ 역시 그의 산문 이론의 핵심어이다. 정홍명이 생각한 문장의 이상적 경지는 글의 목적에 부합하는 적합성과 정확성을 의미하는 ‘시(是)’라고 할 수 있다.
The present study examines the prose in Giamjip(畸庵集), a collection of writings by Jeong Hong-myeong (Giam), a renowned author of the Middle Joseon period. Only parts of Jeong’s prose texts had been studied until now, but full-scale research on his prose has become possible with the complete translation of Giamjip. This study will first introduce the prose from volumes 9 to 12 of Giamjip in detail.
Next, the characteristics of Jeong’s prose and prose theory will be examined. Jeong Hong-myeong is classified as Jinhangomunpa(秦漢古文派), the establishment of Chin and Han Dynasty Classical Literature School. His literary work is heavily influenced by The Zhuangzi(莊子) and Chinese writer Han Yu(韓愈). However, it should be noted that Jeong did not blindly imitate their writing styles; rather, their styles are adapted and blended seamlessly into his prose.
Giamjip includes a number of pieces that present Jeong’s prose theory: “Moonyidaegangbyeon(文以代降辨)”, “Chaekmun(策問, ‘examination questions’)”, and “Yeojoseonnonmulseo(與趙善述論文書)” In these pieces, Jeong puts forth his views on the history of prose in Korea and China, the levels of difficulty of styles, writing good sentences, etc. As mentioned above, his prose theory is influenced by that of Han Yu, which can be seen in the following idiomatic phrases describing the qualities of a good writer: Bujeonilneung(不專一能), the ability to use various writing styles, and Gakshikgijik(各識其職), the use of appropriate expressions to convey the message effectively. Dajeokbakbal(多積薄發), which means accumulate steadily or spur with long accumulation, is another keyword in his prose theory. In a nutshell, Jeong’s ideals of writing can be summarized as “Shi(是, being right)”, appropriateness and accuracy fit for the purpose of writing.
