본고는 김시종의 자서전과 시에 대해서, 자전적 텍스트 『조선과 일본을 살아가다－제주도에서 이카이노(猪飼野)로』(岩波新書, 2015)를 중심으로 논의하고자 한다. 김시종의 ‘자전’적 텍스트는 에세이이든 시 작품이든 자기를 이야기하면서, 자기를, 타자를, 역사적 사건을, 그 사건이 일어난 장소를 되찾기 위해서 이야기해야 할 것을 이야기한다는 태도와 방법을 취한다. 김시종에게 있어서 ‘시’는 자신의 주위에 무수히 존재하는 여러 ‘삶’을 말한다. 김시종은 그것을 일본어에 대한 저항과 해석적 객체화에 의해서 묘사해내고자 한다. 그렇게 해서, 결코 빛나는 삶을 살지 못하고 오히려 학대 받고, 학살당하고, 그 때문에 세상에 알려지지 못했던 ‘삶’이, 바꿔 말하면 역사로부터 누락되어 버리는 ‘삶’이 표현된다. 거기에 더해 되찾아야 할 개개의 삶이 역사적 사건 때문에 가시화되지 못하고 있을 때, 역사적 사건, 그리고 그것이 일어난 장소 또한 되찾는 대상이 된다. 김시종의 ‘자서전’이란 ‘이름’이 북적거리는 ‘장소’의, 나아가 ‘장소’의 ‘역사’를 되찾는 문학적 투쟁이다. 김시종에게 있어서 ‘자서전’의 ‘자(自)’는 개인적 경험에 그치지 않는 확대라는 의미를 지니고 있다.

A purpose of this paper is to analyze Kim Si-Jong’s poetry and ‘autobiographies’ focusing on his autobiographical text, Living in Josen and Japan : from Jeju to IKAINO. Kim Si-Jong’s ‘autobiographical’ texts, essays and poetries, narrate what must be said to recover himself, others, historic events and places where the events occurs. For Kim Si-Jong, ‘poetry’ means numberless ‘lives’ that exists around himself. He tried to describe ‘lives’ by analytical objectifications and objections to Japanese. By the trying, ‘lives’ which were unknown to the world and possibly be omitted from history because of abuse and massacre, could be represented in his poetry. In additions, when ‘lives’ could not be visualized because of overwhelming historic events, he tried to remind a historic event (‘4·3’), and the place where the event happened(‘Jeju’). To Kim Si-Jong, ‘autobiographies’ is a literary struggle to regain the ‘place’ full of ‘names’ and ‘history’ of ‘place’ itself. In this context, the ‘self’ of autobiography is beyond personal matter of experience.
