이 연구는 섬유 매체를 활용한 공공미술의 현재를 살펴본 것이다. 섬유 매체는 인류의 삶과 밀착되어 오늘날까지 함께 해 온 시간만큼 문화적· 심리적· 경제적· 정치적· 예술적 관점이 축적된 예술표현의 재료 중 하나이다. 다층적 특성을 내재한 섬유 매체가 현대인의 삶의 질 향상을 위한 공공미술의 행보에 있어 어떻게 기능하는지를 파악해 보는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 방법은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 도시 환경을 위한 현대 공공미술의 역할과 기능 파악을 위해 공공미술의 개념과 흐름을 이론적으로 고찰한다. 다음으로, 공공미술의 핵심 개념을 전달하기 위한 매개체로서 섬유의 특성을 물리적· 심리적· 예술적 관점으로 분석한다. 마지막으로, 현대 공공장소에서 섬유를 표현의 재료로 활용한 공공조형물의 사례를 탐구하여 도시 환경 개선 및 참여와 소통을 위한 현대 공공미술의 현황을 탐색해 본다. 이 분석으로 다음과 같은 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 공공미술은 섬유 매체에 내재한 다층적 특성을 활용하여 설치된 공공장소의 정체성을 재구축하면서 공공성이 더욱 강조된 영역으로 설정하고 있었다. 이 과정에서 사회적· 경제적· 문화적· 정치적으로 긍정적인 파급 효과가 발생했음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 공공미술은 섬유의 물성으로 관람객의 개입을 수용하여 시각적 호응과 함께 청각, 촉각 등 오감으로 감상할 수 있는 예술의 형태를 제시하고 있었다. 이는 곧 공공미술과 섬유예술의 잠재적 가능성을 재고할 수 있는 부분으로 후속 연구에서 공공미술의 관점으로 살펴본 현대 섬유예술의 유형을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 공공미술과 섬유 매체의 체계를 연계적 관점에서 살펴본 것에 이 연구의 의의를 두며, 이 연구는 그에 기반하여 분석한 초기 단계의 논문으로 후속 연구를 위한 탐색적인 연구의 특징을 가진다고 할 수 있겠다.

This is a research on the current status of fiber material usage in public arts. Fiber material is closely related to human lives and is meaningful in cultural, psychological, economical, political and aesthetical terms up to this day. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence fiber material has on public arts. The method of research is as follows. Firstly, examine the concept of public art in theoretical perspective to address the role and function it plays on the enhancement of urban environment. Secondly, analyze fiber material’s physical, psychological and aesthetical aspects. Finally, examine examples of public sculptures that use fiber materials to find out the current state of public art for urban environment enhancement and public participation. With these following analyses, the following results were derived. Primarily, by using the multi-layered aspects of fiber material public art promoted the identity of public places and emphasized the public aspect. During this process we have found out that it has a positive influence both socially, economically, culturally and politically. Furthermore, public art introduces art in forms that stimulate the five senses by accepting user interventions. This calls for a reconsideration on the potential of public art and fiber art and will be noted on a subsequent research. This research is meaningful in that it integrates public art with the system of fiber material. Furthermore, this analysis is based on the perspective mentioned above and will be focusing on analyses so that it could lead to other subsequent researches.
