인종과 성별, 종교, 성적 지향, 직업 등과 관련하여 소수 약자에 대한 편견이 섞인 표현을 쓰지 말자는 운동에서 시작된 ‘정치적 올바름(Political Correctness)’은 현재 인터넷 게시판에서 다른 의도와 목적으로 회자되는 편이다. 차별에 대한 반대 운동이었던 정치적 올바름은 문화콘텐츠 시장의 주요한 소재로 사용되고 있으며, 이는 긍정적인 반응과 부정적인 반응 모두를 불러일으키고 있다. 애니메이션 시장에서는 과거부터 이어오던 전통적인 주인공 여성의 외형을 탈피하여 유색인종으로 설정을 변화시키고 있다. 또한 영화, 게임 시장에서도 주인공 캐릭터로 소외되었던 유색인종, 여성들을 적극적으로 도입하거나, 성적 소수자성 역시 적극적으로 개입시키는 등의 변화를 만들어 냈다. 이런 변화는 평단에게 긍정적인 평가를 이끌어내기도 했지만, 많은 대중들이 거부감을 표현하기도 하였다. 대중들의 거부감은 익숙한 소재에서의 탈피에 원인이 있기도 하지만, 그보다 선택적으로 적용되는 정치적 올바름의 상황에 대한 혐오에 원인을 두기도 한다. 맥락과 무관하게 쓰였다고 여겨지는 캐릭터, 소재들에서 대중들은 차별에 대한 반대를 읽은 것이 아니라, 상업주의에 영합하는 콘텐츠 기업들의 전략적 선택만을 느꼈기 때문이다. 물론 그렇다고 이와 같은 ‘정치적 올바름’의 추구를 거두어들일 수는 없다. 우리가 진정으로 추구해야 할 것은 그런 소수자들에 대한 배려와 콘텐츠 내에서의 소수자성에 대한 추구가 특별한 것이 아니라 너무도 자연스러워 그것이 ‘정치적 올바름’에 의한 것이라는 인식조차 사라질 세상이기 때문이다. 물론 오늘도 ‘정치적 올바름’은 분란의 이유일 수는 있지만, 그것조차 차별 없는 세상으로 나아가는 발걸음이라 생각해야 할 것이다.

And the main character of the colored race takes over the place. There was also a growing interest in people of color and women in movies and games. In addition, the number of sexual minorities is increasing. The change received positive reviews from critics. However, the public also expresses disapproval. That's why the public's reluctance is out of the familiar. But what's bigger is that political correctness is optional. Especially in characters and materials used without context, the public feels only corporate commercialism. Of course, that doesn't mean we can give up our pursuit of political correctness. What we really need to pursue is not consideration for minorities. Beyond that, it should be able to go beyond what minorities perceive as special. For this reason, I think today's disruption of political correctness could be a step toward tomorrow.
