이 글에서는 함남 방언의 모음 체계와 그 통시적 변화에 대하여 논의하였다. 20세기 초엽의 함남 방언 자료와 20세기 중엽 이후의 함흥 지역어 자료를 비교함으로써 모음 체계의 통시적 변화 과정 및 진행 중인 변화의 방향에 대하여 살펴보았다. 논의한 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현장시간의 관점에서, 20세기 초엽의 함남 방언은 대체로 /ㅚ, ㅟ/(=/ö, ü/)를 포함한 10모음 체계였으나 점차 /ㅚ, ㅟ/가 비음운화됨에 따라 8모음 체계로 변화된 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 20세기 중엽 이후에는 /ㅡ/(=/ɨ/)의 조음역이 점차 /ㅜ/(=/u/) 쪽으로 이동함으로써 모음 체계상 /ㅡ/>/ㅜ/의 합류가 진행되어 온 것으로 보인다. 음성적으로는 /ㅗ/(=/o/)가 저설화되고 /ㅓ/(=/ə/)가 고설화되는 변화가 진행되어 왔으며, /ㅔ/(=/e/)와 /ㅐ/(=/ε/)는 비교적 안정적인 대립을 유지하고 있다. 특히 1950년대 이후 북한에서 이러한 모음 체계의 변화가 급속히 전개된 것으로 추정된다. 셋째, /ㅡ/>/ㅜ/의 합류가 완료되면 함남 방언의 모음 체계는 /ㅣ(i), ㅔ(e), ㅐ(ε), ㅓ(ə), ㅏ(a), ㅜ(u), ㅗ(ɔ)/의 7모음 체계가 될 것으로 예측된다.

This paper discussed the vowel system of the South Hamgyeong dialect and its diachronic change. It examined the process of the diachronic change in the vowel system and the direction of the change in progress by comparing the South Hamgyeong dialect data from the early 20th century and the Hamheung subdialect data from the mid-20th century. The discussions are as follows: First, from the apparent time perspective, it is supposed that the South Hamgyeong dialect of the early 20th century was generally a 10-vowel system, including /ㅚ, ㅟ/(=/ö, ü/), but it gradually changed to an 8-vowel system as /ㅚ, ㅟ/ dephonologized. Second, since the mid-20th century, the region of articulation of /ㅡ/(=/ɨ/) has gradually moved toward /ㅜ/(=/u/), which seems to have led to /ㅡ/>/ㅜ/ merging in the vowel system. Phonetically, /ㅗ/(=/o/) has been lowered and /ㅓ/(=/ə/) has been raised, while /ㅔ/(=/e/) and /ㅐ/(=/ε/) maintain a relatively stable opposition. In particular, it is estimated that such changes in the vowel system have developed rapidly in North Korea since the 1950s. Third, upon completion of merging /ㅡ/>/ㅜ/, it is predicted that the vowel system of the South Hamgyeong dialect will be the 7-vowel system of /ㅣ(i), ㅔ(e), ㅐ(ε), ㅏ(a), ㅜ(u), and ㅗ(ɔ)/.
