본고의 대상은 호남지역 패총이며 시간적 범위는 B.C 4·3∼A.D. 4세기로 설정하였다. 패총에서는 ‘새로운 특징’을 보이고, 문헌자료와 부합하는 측면이 있다. 이 점을 고려하여 개별패총의 상대편년과 신문물과 이에 상응되는 문헌자료를 통해서 4시기로 설정하였다. Ⅰ기는 점토대토기문화와 관련되며, 2기로 세분된다. Ⅰ-1기는 원형점토대토기문화와 관련되고, 서해안·만경강일대에 집중되며, 시기적으로 B.C. 4·3~B.C. 2세기 중반 동안이다. 만경강유역 토광묘집단이 해상교류를 통한 연화보-세죽리유형의 철기문화를 기반으로 지역사회를 주도한다. Ⅰ-2기는 삼각형점토대토기문화와 관련되며, 서해안·영산강일대의 해남 군곡리에 집중되며, 시기적으로 B.C. 2세기 후반~B.C. 1세기 중반 동안이다. 고조선 패망과 맞물려 만경강일대 토광묘집단이 해체됨으로써 서해안·만경강일대의 연안항로는 쇠퇴한다. Ⅱ기는 낙랑계한문물이 확인되며, 시기적으로 B.C. 1 세기 중·후반~A.D. 1세기동안이다. 서해안·영산강일대의 연안항로가 활성화되며, 낙랑군의 상업적 기능이 강화되는 시기와 일치한다. Ⅲ기는 물질문화에서 ‘공통적 보편성’이 확인되며, 시기적으로 2세기경이다. 한·예 세력이 강성해져서 낙랑군이 위축되는 시기와 상응한다. 서해안·영산강일대를 필두로 권역별 지역사회가 연안항로를 점유해 간다. Ⅳ기는 패총 수가 급증하며, 시기적으로 3~4세기경이다. 권역별 지역사회가 연안항로의 주도권을 확보해하지만 낙랑군과 대방군이 복속되고, 백제가 전성기를 이루는 4세기 후반경 무렵 패총은 쇠퇴되어간다. 패총은 신통로의 중요성이 인식되는 시기에 마한 세력의 동향을 보여주는 대표적 유적이며, 해양세력의 등장을 의미한다. 패총에 철기문화가 유입된 이후에 바다와 강은 경계의 의미를 벗어나 통로로서 새롭게 인식된다. 그 의미를 단선적으로 해석하기보다는 ‘새로운 인식’ 전환의 패러다임이라는 시각으로 보았다. 패총이 철기문화 문화의 유입을 전후로 하여 단순한 생계를 위한 경제활동을 위한 장소였다면, 생산경제를 위한 장소로 전환된다. 패총은 지역사회로 들어가는 ‘관문사회’의 기능을 수행하였다.

The third period is confirmed by the Nakrang Chinese text, and it is until the first century of the late B.C. 1st century. It coincides with the time when the commercial function of Nakrang County is strengthened. The Ⅲ period is confirmed to be common universal in material culture and is around the second century in time. It corresponds to the time when the Korean and Japanese forces became stronger and the Nakrang army was shrinking. The community is securing the initiative of coastal routes. The VI period is the third to fourth centuries, with the number of heaps increasing. The Nakrang and Daebang army are subjugated, and the patriarchy is extinguished in the late 4th century when Baekje is in its heyday. Clam a pile is a representative marine heritage as a product of marine culture as a trace of marine activity, and it means the emergence of marine forces. In the pamphlets where iron culture is introduced, the sea and river are newly recognized as passages beyond the meaning of the boundary. Rather than interpreting the meaning in a single line, it was seen as a paradigm of new perceptional change. If the patriarch was a place for economic activities for simple livelihoods before and after the influx of iron culture culture, it would be converted into a place for production economy.
