연극적 관습을 과감히 파괴하는 새로운 극적 실험을 통해 차세대 극작가로 인정받는 재키 드루리는 메타 연극적 ‘수행’을 통해 작가적 소신을 실천한다. 2019년도 퓰리처상 수상작인 『페어뷰』(Fairview)은 관객들에게 사회 속 현실의 문제를 직시하도록 요구하는 당돌하고도 다소 불편한 극적 장치로 많은 주목을 받았다. 이 작품은 메타 연극적 특성에 기반을 두고 전통적 극작 관습의 이성적 논리적 방식을 해체하는 드루리의 미학적 특징을 보여준다. 극중 극의 특성을 반영한 “반투명 거울”(one way mirroring)장치를 통해 연극성(theatricality)과 현실, 등장인물과 배우, 인물과 작가, 그리고 관객과 배우의 경계가 해체되고 정치적 의미와 긴장감이 더해진다. 극중 극 기법으로 차용한 코믹멜로드라마를 창의적 ‘수행성’을 통해 인종의 정치적/사회적 의미를 재해석하는 도구로 사용할 뿐 만 아니라 ‘공정한 시선’을 확보하기 위한 극적 도구로 사용한다. 통상적 코믹 멜로드라마에 대한 관객들의 기대를 깨뜨리는 반전을 제시하는 당돌하고도 불편한 극적 장치는 등장인물들의 다중적 수행을 가능하게 하여 연극성과 현실, 등장인물과 배우, 작가, 그리고 관객의 역할이 상대적이며 그들의 아이덴티티 역시 후천적 생성물임을 강조한다. 제 4의 벽을 허무는 극적 경계의 해체는 사회에 깊이 드리운 흑인에 대한 감시의 시선이라는 불편한 진실의 실체를 파헤쳐 보기 위한 혁신적 패러다임이다. 메타연극적 수행성을 통해 극에서 구현하는 통합된 자아의 해체와 역할의 다중성은 동 시대의 흑인 극작가들이 추구하는 포스트 흑인 미학의 특성과 맥을 같이 하는 것으로 드루리를 포함한 3세대 작가들이 주축이 된 포스트 드라마의 뚜렷한 특징이기도 하다.
Jackie Sibblies Drury who has practiced her dramatic conviction by creative and innovative dramatic experience applies metatheatrical performativity in her Pulitzer Prize winning play Fairview. She has got attention with her embarrassing and uncomfortable theatrical gesture for the audience giving it the opportunity to complete the performance paying attention to the racialization of bodies in the society. In Fairview, muti-leveled theatrical device including one way mirroring, play within the play adopting comic melodrama is creatively foregrounded, deconstructing the boundary of theatricality and reality, characters and actors, characters and playwright, audience and actors. The metatheatrical methodology enhances socio/political awareness by introducing ordinary routine of black middle class family Frasiers who are continuously threatened by the ‘uncertain’ forces and disappeared gradually under the surveillance system. Drury’s theatrical representation has laid an accusation on the limitation of the representation of the blackness in the theatrical space and made the audience to realize the importance of the visuality of the individual experience and the representation of blackness. Drury suggests us/audience to deliberate the political meaning of the social constructs with a “fair view”.
