Over the last decades, direct methane conversion to methanol has been attracting much attentions in the scientific and industrial community. However, due to the lower C-H bond-dissociation energy of methanol than methane, the formation of methanol in high yield is almost an infeasible target in this process. Therefore, in order to overcome this issue, one of the best strategy is converting methane to methanol precursors such as methyl bisulfate or methyl trifluoroacetate by carrying out the methane oxidation reaction in oleum or trifluoroacetic acid. in this study, the Pd-catalyzed partial oxidation of methane to methyl trifluoroacetate in trifluoroaceitc acid at benign reaction conditions with K2S2O8 as an oxidant is reported. The catalytic activity of Pd-based catalyst systems strongly depends on the organic ligands in the Pd complexes. Moreover, the dependence of the catalyst concentration and the reaction time on the catalytic activity are also studied in detail.
