소크라테스의 다이몬은 전통적인 올림포스의 신들과도 다르고 크세노파네스 이후에 출현하는 철학적 신과도 다르다. 소크라테스적 신성의 가장 중요한 특징은 그 신성이 인간의 자연적 삶을 정당화해주지 않는다는데 있다. 소크라테스의 신성, 곧 다이몬은 인간 삶을 검토하여 무지를 자각하게 함으로써 인간 정신의 안정적인 상태를 혼란스럽게 만든다. 소크라테스의 다이몬은 인간 사유와 부정적인 관계를 맺는다. 곧 인간의 의식이나 사유에 대해 ‘아니라’고만 말한다. 자신의 생각이나 지식을 과신하여 항상 당당하게 사는 자에게 소크라테스의 신성은 묻는다. 너 자신의 지혜나 지식이 과연 확실한가? 너 스스로 무언가를 알고 있다고 생각하는가? 인간적 지혜가 대단하다고 생각하는가? 이와 같은 질문을 던져 놓고 인간적 지혜는 보잘 것 없고 아무 것도 아님을 자각해야만 가치 있는 삶을 살 수 있다고 말한다. 즉 다이몬의 목소리를 통해 스스로가 보잘 것 없음을 자각하고 교만함을 버리고 겸허한 삶의 자세를 견지하라고 권한다. 자연적 삶의 편안함을 떨치고 불편한 진실의 목소리를 통해 스스로의 보잘 것 없음을 자각하는 삶만이 가치 있음을 알려준다. 이와 같은 소크라테스의 다이몬은 인간 삶과 얽혀서 생사고락을 같이 하는 올림포스의 신들도 아니고 존재와 인식의 최고 장점에서 세상의 존재와 인식을 가능하게 하는 적극적 근거(positive foundation)로서의 철학적 신과도 다르다. 소크라테스적 신성(다이몬)은 인간 삶의 근원적 가치를 재검토함으로써 서양적 삶의 방식의 근간을 형성한다.

Socratic divinity makes a new epoch in the history of Greek religion. Socratic god(daimonion) is not the same as traditional Olympos gods and also the philosophical god, originated from Xenophanes, followed by Parmenides, Plato and Aristotle. The most distinct feature of Socratic divinity(daimonion) is that it does not provide human life with solid foundation, but by recognizing ignorance through examining life of man, undermine the basis of it. Socratic daimonion alwanys enters into a negative relation to human consciousness. When Socratic daimonion comes it always holds man back from what he is thinking or doing, but never urges him forward. Socrates always ask man who thinks he himself is wise: are you quite confident of your knowledge, wisdom? Do you think that you know something? After asking these questions, Socrates says human life is worth living only if he recognizes that human wisdom is of little or no value. He advises us recognizing he himself is of or no value, excaping from hybris, and sustaining humility through careful listening to the voice of daimonion. Only the man who recognizes his insignificance, by throwing off comfort of daily life and accepting the uneasy voice of truth, is worth having a good life. Socratic daimonion is different from the olympos gods sharing all the joys and sorrows with human being(mortal), and from philosophical gods which provide man with positive foundation. Socratic divinity never justifies unexamined human life. Socratic divinity(daimonion) establishes the basis of western way of life, through examining the basic value of life of man.
