본 논문은 국제정치학(IR)에서 최근 주목받고 있는 감정에 관한 연구들을 이론적, 방법론적 측면에서 비판적으로 검토하고, 향후 이론화에 주는 함의를 찾는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 우선 감정의 개념화와 존재론적 기반에 대해 고찰한다. 기존 의 감정연구에선 미시/거시 수준과 개인/집합적 수준에서 감정의 개념화나 존재 화가 이뤄지는 경향이 있으나 본 글에서는 감정이 인간의 보편적 특성과 사회문화적 특수성을 동시에 갖고 있으며 이 두 측면이 대립하는 것도 아니며 어느 한쪽 이 우위를 갖는 것도 아니라는 점을 강조한다. 나아가 본 논문은 IR에서 감정연구 의 핵심적 과제 중 하나는 개인의 감정이 어떻게 집단화/정치화되는지를 파악하는 것에 있다고 보고, 집단감정, 사회정체성과 감정의 역학관계, 그리고 감정정치 (affective politics)에 관해 심도 있는 논의를 전개한다. 관련하여 본 논문에서는 감정과 권력정치의 관계를 좀 더 명료하게 이해하기 위한 세 가지 연구방향과 관련 개념을 제시한다. 마지막으로 본 글은 감정연구의 발전과 수용이 국제관계 이론화에 주는 함의를 논의하면서 감정연구가 성찰주의(reflectivism)의 시각에서 설명이론의 차원을 넘어선 규범적 측면에서 더욱 요청되어야 한다고 주장한다. 성찰적 관점에서 볼 때, 감정연구는 국가 간 혹은 민족 간의 갈등중재, 화해, 평화 구축을 위한 공감적 기반의 형성을 위해 매우 중요한 실천적 기능을 수행할 수 있다고 본다.
In recent years, there has been growing interest in emotion in the field of International Relations (IR). This article intends to carry out a critical review of the recent IR literature on emotion from theoretical and methodological perspectives and discuss what implications an ‘emotional turn’ has for theorization about the international. To this end, the article first ponders the issues associated with the conceptual and ontological foundation of emotion. Although the extant studies tend to conceptualize emotions at a micro vs. macro level or at an individual vs. group level, we argue that emotion has both individual and group (micro and macro) ontological natures in which neither of them is given an ontological and thus conceptual and analytical priority. Based on this discussion, the article identifies how individual emotions lead to a collective and political emotion. Given such a paucity of work on ‘affective politics,’ we lay out a set of research agendas and related concepts that can help us have a better understanding of the relationship between emotion and power politics. This article concludes with critical implications of the developments in the recent studies on emotion for theorizing international relations. We suggest that IR should take the study of emotion and its normative appeal seriously. Through reflectivism, emotion studies can offer significant practical values in terms of generating empathy, a necessary foundation for reconciliation and peace building among states and ethnicities.
