본 논문은 숭산행원의 선사상(이하 숭산선)인 ‘오직 모를 뿐(Only don't know)’이 현대교육에 주는 시사점을 살펴보는데 있다. 경허 →만공 →고봉→숭산으로 이어지는 덕숭산문의 법계를 이어받은 숭산은 1972년 미국포교에 나서 한국의 선불교를 세계에 알리기 시작하였다. 숭산의 활발발한 선기(禪機)를 통한 직지인심과 이심전심의 해외포교과정 속에서 숭산선은 한자와 개념적 용어에서 이탈되어 일상적 영어로 전환 되었는데 대표적으로 ‘오직 모를 뿐(Only don't know)’은, ‘오직 할 뿐(Just do it)’, ‘무엇을 도와드릴까요? (How may I help you?)’등과 더불어 숭산선의 핵심을 이룬다. 숭산선에서 ‘오직 모를 뿐’은 관념으로 부터의 이탈을 촉구하는 역동적 지(知)이면서 동시에 부처, 불성, 무심, 무아 등 불교에서 말하는 참 존재 자체를 가리키는 말이다. 이를 통해 주체는 분별에서 벗어나 외부와 하나 되는 ‘동일화’를 이루며 이것은 불교 윤리인 동체대비(同體大悲)의 바탕이 된다. 현대교육은 규정된 지식을 전달하는 것에만 집중하고 있는데 규정적 지식이 가진 ‘고정성’과 ‘배타성’으로 인해 현재의 교육은 불교적 의미의 자유와 관용을 얻지 못하고 고립과 단절로 향해가고 있다. 이에 규정된 지식으로부터의 해방을 의미하는 ‘오직 모를 뿐’이 갖는 교육적 의의는 크다.

This paper aims to study the “Only Don't Know,” a thought of Zen master Seung sahn, and to learn its educational significance to modern education. As a 78ht Patriarch in Chogye Linage, Seung sahn started to propagate in America in 1972 and after that Korean Zen Buddhism began to spread widely to the world. ‘Only Don’t know’ is the core of Seung sahn’s Zen teaching. ‘Only don't know’ is a dynamic knowledge that urges the departure of ideas, and is a ,at the same time, our true self of Buddhism meaning. Modern education focuses only on teaching the prescribed knowledge, but due to the ‘fixedness’ and ‘exclusion’ of the prescribed knowledge, the current education does not gain freedom and tolerance. thus, the educational significance of ‘Only don’t know’, which means liberation from prescribed knowledge, is important.
