The objective of this study is to examine Korean female university students’ language attitude toward foreign accent using Korean language. This study set up three research questions. First, could the Korean female university students recognize the speakers’ mother tongues by listening to their foreign accents? Second, could the Korean female university students recognize differences of foreign accent in accordance with speakers’ mother tongues? Third, would the Korean female university students’ language attitude be changed when the foreign accent is changed? For this, after letting total 50 female university students listen to the articulation of Korean language by a Vietnamese-speaking speaker, Kazakh-speaking speaker, Chinese-speaking speaker, and Japanese-speaking speaker, the test participants’ language attitudes were recorded in the questionnaire for measuring the language attitude. In the results of this study, the Korean female university students could not accurately recognize the speakers’ mother tongues by listening to their foreign accents. However, the university students recognized differences of foreign accent in accordance with speakers’ mother tongues, and they showed different language attitudes accordingly. Such results of this study show that the foreign accent is working as code-markers, especially an indicator showing the language community that the speakers belong to, to the Korean female university students.(Chonnam Nat’l University)
