본 연구는 기존 사회자본 개념에 대한 비판적 검토와 재개념화를 바탕으로 제시되고 있는 린의 사회자본 모델을 문헌 분석을 통해 구체적으로 살펴보는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 그의 연구는 사회연결망에 초점을 두고 차별적인 개념정의를 바탕으로 사회자본에 대한 독자적인 모델과 측정모형까지 제시하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 린은 사회자본을 ‘사회연결망에 내재되어 있으며, 행위자가 접근하고 동원할 수 있는 자원’으로 파악하고 있다. 린은 이상과 같은 함의를 가지고 있는 사회자본에 대한 정의를 바탕으로 ① 사회자본에 대한 투자 ② 사회자본의 접근과 동원 ③ 사회자본의 결과(보상)를 포괄하는 사회자본에 대한 이론모델을 제시하였다. 그의 이론모델은 사회연결망 내에서 집단의 집합적 자산과 불평등체계 내에서의 행위자의 지위, 연결망 내에 배태된 자원에 대한 접근과 동원, 그리고 보상이라는 세 가지 기본 요소들에 바탕을 두고 있으며, 린은 이상과 같은 모든 과정을 사회자본화(social capitalization)과정으로 명명하였다. 이러한 그의 연구는 사회관계에 대한 관심을 다시 불러왔다는 것과 사회불평등에 대한 분석을 새로운 관점에서 접근해 볼 수 있는 이론적 근거를 제시하였다는 측면에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

This study aims to reviews Nan Lin’s model of social capital. Nan Lin is a distinguishing scholar who offers a different sociological conceptualization of social capital. Based on a stern definition of social capital he provides probably the narrowest conception of social capital, with a clear focus on social network as instrumental resources that individual can access. This sociological view is often called the network approach to social capital theory. Conceived as investment in embedded resources in social networks, social capital focuses on resource of tie that an actors, an individual or groups, can access for attaining goals. He point out two approaches can be used to assess the effects of social capital: its capacity (assessed resources) and actual uses for particular actions (mobilized resources). Lin denominates this all process as social capitalization.
