‘부정변증법’이라는 용어는 아도르노가 헤겔의 변증법에 대해 가지는 양가적인 관계를 함축한다. 즉, 아도르노는 헤겔의 변증법적 사유를 계승하지만, 동시에 헤겔의 변증법을 긍정적인 변증법으로 규명하고, 이에 맞서 변증법을 부정적인 것으로 변화시키고자 한다. 이러한 의미에서 부정변증법은 헤겔의 변증법에 대한 비판적인 전유이다. 본 논문은 변증법의 ‘종합’개념에 대한 분석을 통해 헤겔과 아도르노의 변증법 사이의 이러한 관계를 드러낸다. 양자의 변증법에서 종합은 동일한 기능을 수행하지만, 아도르노는 종합의 개념에 헤겔이 부여하는 것과는 정반대의 의미를 부여함으로써 그것을 재전유한다. 요컨대, 헤겔에서 종합이 동일성과 비동일성의 긍정적인 동일성에 대한 표지라면, 아도르노에게서 종합은 동일성과 비동일성의 부정적인 비동일성을 나타내게 되는 것이다. 이러한 방식으로 종합 개념을 와해하지 않으면서도 비판적으로 해석함을 통해 아도르노는 헤겔이 변증법에 덧씌운 긍정성을 부정성으로 대체할 수 있게 된다.

The term ‘Negative Dialectics’ implies the ambivalent relationship Adorno has with the Hegelian Dialectic. Whilst Adorno largely inherits the Hegelian Dialectic, he simultaneously finds it positive, against which he strives to transform the dialectics into a negative one. Negative Dialectic in this sense is a critical appropriation of the Hegelian Dialectic. This essay analyzes the dialectical concept of ‘Synthesis,’ in an attempt to illuminate such a relationship between the two. In both thinkers’ dialectics, synthesis carries out the same function. Yet, Adorno endows the concept with a meaning opposite to that of Hegel, thus reappropriating it. Briefly put, whereas synthesis in Hegel’s dialectics is a sign of the positive identity between identity and non-identity, for Adorno, it instead signifies the negative non-identity of identity and non-identity. Adorno successfully replaces positivity, which has been given to the dialectics by Hegel, with negativity, by critically reinterpreting, and without thereby disintegrating, the concept of synthesis.
