영웅의 진정한 의미를 생각해 보기 전에, 평범한 우리에게는 그들이 가진 능력이 먼저 눈에 들어오는 것이다. 비관적으로 보자면, 영웅의 전제조건은 곧 힘이고 현실의 우리는 힘이 없어서 영웅 같은 건 될 수 없다고 결론 내리기 쉽다. 여기서 스필버그의 <워 호스>는 오늘의 현실에서 진정한 힘이 무엇인지 우리에게 해답을 준다. 그것은 바로 공감이다. 모든 성장 영화는 주체성을 다룬다. 그리고 성장하려는 주체를 더 큰 무대로 내던진다. <워 호스>는 굉장히 복잡하고 상징적인 영화이다. 기마부대로 말에 휘장을 달고 싸웠던 아버지가 훗날 아들과 말로 분리되고 있다는 점. 그리고 아버지를 이해하지 못했던 아들이 전쟁이라는 동일한 경험을 겪으며 아버지의 분리된 요소와 합쳐지고 다시 마을로 귀환한다는 점은 매우 인상적이다. 이 영화에서 나는 타인에 대한 공감 그 자체의 중요성과 아름다움을 알아 볼 것이며 평범한 사람이 주체성을 통해 어떻게 스스로를 극복하고 영웅이 되는지 알아보고자 한다. 아울러 사람, 말의 눈을 자세히 담고 있는 카메라와 상황에 따른 화면의 색온도 변화가 주는 효과에 대 해서도 알아보고자 한다.
