봉준호 감독의 영화 <기생충>이 전 세계에서 흥행기록을 세우고 칸 영화제 ‘황금종려상’ 수상뿐 아니라 아카데미 시상식에서 비영어 영화 최초로 작품상까지 거머쥐면서 세계적인 현상이 되었다는 것에 이견을 갖는 사람은 드물 것이다. 그에 대한 결과로 <기생충>과 <기생충>의 세계무대에서의 성공이 이 영화를 얼마나 중요한 영화로 만들었는지, 또 이 영화가 어떻게 1인치 자막의 장벽을 깰 수 있었는지에 대한 수많은 자료들이 생겨났다. 그러나 <기생충>의 성공은 그 전례 없는 여정에 이르기까지의 요인, 그리고 봉준호 감독의 영화들이 얼마나 한국영화산업의 발전과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는지, 또 초국가적인 흐름과는 얼마나 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있으면서도 동시에 독립적인지를 검토해 볼 때 더 잘 이해하게 된다. 그렇게 해서 이 논문은 영화 <기생충>에 묘사된 사회 불균형이라는 초국가적인 주제, 그리고 궁극적으로 이 영화의 성공에는 어떤 다른 측면들이 존재했는지, 또 그 모든 요소들이 어떻게 연결되어 있는지를 살펴보기에 앞서 먼저 봉준호 감독 영화의 맥락 속에 존재하는 국가적인 영화와 초국가적인 영화 사이의 복잡하면서도 상호의존적인 관계에 대해 그리고 어떻게 <기생충>이 국가적인 영화와 초국가적인 영화 간 교차에 있어 새 패러다임을 구축했는지 탐구하고자 한다.

Few would disagree that Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite has been a global phenomenon having broken box office records across the globe, bringing home the Palme d’Or and becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Consequently, there is an abundance of material on Parasite and how its success on the global stage has turned it into a hugely significant film and how it has broken the one-inch barrier of subtitled films. Its success, however, is better understood when also examining the factors leading up to its unprecedented journey and how Bong’s films are closely connected with developments in the Korean film industry and how it is interrelated - but also self-dependent - to transnational flows. In so doing, this paper explores the complex but interdependent relationship between national and transnational cinema within the context of Bong’s films before examining the transnational themes of social disparity in Parasite and ultimately what were the different facets involved in its success, how this is all connected and how the film has established a new paradigm on the national and transnational cinema intersection.
