Protoporphyrin IX encapsulated drug delivery system for photo-responsive anti-cancer treatment

Folic acid functionalized silica/titania hollow nanoparticles (FA-HNP) with diameter 50 nm are synthesized for encapsulating hydrophobic photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). The PpIX encapsulated FA-HNP (FA-HNP-PpIX) induces photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer cells under visible light condition. The fabricated FA-HNP-PpIX is investigated by transmission electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrophoretic light scattering and UV-visible spectroscopy. In MCF-7 cell, The anti-cancer activity of FA-HNP-PpIX is evaluated as 25.5%, which is about 3 times effective than previous PpIX based research. In this research, we investigated the application of FAHNP- PpIX as an anti-cancer agent.
