이청준의 「병신과 머저리」는 글쓰기 행위와 정체성을 엮으며 인물의 치열한 자아 탐색을 그려나간 텍스트이다. 본고에서는 「병신과 머저리」에 나오는 두 인물의 정체성 탐색을 종합적으로 논의해 보기 위해 폴 리쾨르의 ‘삼중의 미메시스triple mimésis’ 개념을 원용하여 각 모멘트에서 나타난 정체성의 구체적인 양상들을 살피고 이들을 종합하였다. 먼저 미메시스Ⅰ의 단계는 형의 소설이 쓰이기 전과 ‘나’가 형의 소설을 읽기 전에 해당하며 두 인물의 세상에 대한 시각을 바탕으로 각각의 정체성을 살폈다. 미메시스Ⅱ의 단계에서는 형이 쓴 소설을 바탕으로 형의 정체성을 고찰하였으며 이때 그레마스의 구조 분석을 원용하여 심층적인 분석이 되도록 하였다. 미메시스Ⅲ의 단계에서는 소설을 쓰고 난 후 변화한 형의 정체성과 소설을 읽고 난 후 변화를 겪은 ‘나’의 정체성에 주목하였다. 끝으로 각각의 모멘트에서 나타난 정체성이 재동일화되는 양상을 리쾨르의 ‘자체성’과 ‘자기성’ 개념을 통해 종합하였다.

Lee Chung-Jun's “A Fool and an Idiot” is a text that depicts a process of intense self-exploration where main characters search for their self-identities by engaging in writing activities. In order to comprehensively discuss the search for two characters’ identities, this paper uses the concept of ‘Triple mimésis’ of Paul Ricoeur to examine the specific aspect s of identity expressed in each moment and synthesizes them. First, MimésisⅠ stage falls on the period before the older brother’s novel is written and before ‘I’ reads his brother’s novel. Two identities are examined, respectively, considering an outlook on the world each char acter has. At the MimésisⅡ stage, the identity of the older bother is focused in reference to his novel. Greimas’ structural analysis is employed for an in -depth analysis. At the stage of MimésisⅢ, this paper mainly reveals the change of id entity on the part of the older brother who finishes his writing and the shift in identity ‘I’ goes through after reading his brother’s novel. Finally, the reidentification shown in the identities in each monent is synthesized applying Ricoeur’s concepts of ‘identité-idem’ and ‘identité-ip se’.
