장신구는 현대인들의 개성을 표현하고, 문화 예술적으로는 한 나라의 문화수준을 평가하는 기준이 될 수 있는 중요한 장식조형물이며, 경제적으로는 고부가가치 문화상품으로 중요 산업 제품이다. 우리의 장신구 제품이 세계시장에서 경쟁력을 갖기 위해서는 소재 및 디자인의 독창성과 세련됨 그리고 뛰어난 제작 기술이 확보되어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 동양의 전통 보석인 천연 연옥의 개념과 특성을 확인하였으며, 한 국전통문양의 역사성과 조형적 특징, 활용 방안 등을 정리하여 이를 디자인의 주제로 활용 하였다. 시제품의 제작기법은 현대 장신구 제품 생산을 위한 가장 핵심적인 기법인 탈납주조기법(Lost-wax Casting Technique)을 연구하여 실무적 활용가치를 고려하였다. 이러한 연구가 우리나라 현대 장신구의 정체성을 확립하고, 세계 장신구 시장에서의 경쟁력을 확보하기 위한 발전 방안을 모색하는 과정이 되기를 기대한다.

Ornaments are valuable in a variety of aspects. On the personal level, ornaments serve as means of self expression and fashion embellishment. On the cultural and artistic level, ornaments are indicative of the sophistication of decorative artworks that are a measure of the cultural standards of a country. On the economic level, ornaments are essential and emblematic cultural products with high added value. For Korea's ornamental products to be competitive in the global market, originality in materials and design as well as outstanding production technology are required. Accordingly, this study identifies the concept and special features of the most traditional of Oriental gemstone, jade, and illuminates its historical significance, artistic features, and methods of utilizing it in design. As to the production technique of the sample piece, the Lost-Wax Casting Technique, a most fundamental technique for production of contemporary ornaments, is studied to evaluate its viability for utilization. I hope that this study will further the strengthening of the identity of Korea's contemporary ornaments and the efforts to secure competitiveness for Korea's jade handicraft in the world market.
