The purpose of this research is finding a method for distinguishing derivatives of Korean color terms, ‘black’ and ‘white’ by using iconicity. It is very hard for Korean learners to understand derivatives with prefix and derivative with suffix of the terms ‘black’ and ‘white even though they look through a dictionary since the numbers of derivatives are big and difference of meaning is not noticeable. This research explains meaning types of derivative with prefix and derivative with suffix based on the theory of iconicity and proposes ‘meaning discrimination of Korean color terms’ for Korean learners. This ‘meaning discrimination of Korean color terms’ enables Korean learners to infer the meaning of color derivative without the help of dictionaries. (Kyungpook Natioanl University)
