본 논문의 목적은 『주역』 「진괘(震卦)」와 경(敬) 사상의 연관성을 밝히는 것에 있다. ‘경’은 유가 수양론에 있어서 빠질 수 없는 핵심 개념이다. ‘경’은 인간의 마음을 주재하고 몸을 단속하여 수양의 처음과 끝을 관통한다. ‘경’의 최종 목적은 한 인간을 성인에 이르게 하고 공동체 사회를 조화롭게 만드는 것이다. ‘경’ 수양을 가능하게 하는 인간 본원의 마음가짐은 두려움이다. 그것은 단순한 공포심이 아닌 도덕적인 두려움을 뜻한다. 인간은 도덕적 두려움을 가지고 자신의 마음과 행동을 돌아보고, 잘못된 방향으로 빠지지 않도록 늘 경계한다. 『주역』의 진괘는 우레로 인해 발생하는 두려움에 대해서 말한다. 우레는 인간에게 위협적인 자연현상이다. 인간은 자연현상을 통해 느낀 공포의 감정을 도덕적 두려움으로 치환하여 자신을 반성한다. 우레가 인간의 도덕적 두려움을 일깨우는 역할을 하는 것이다. 이처럼 경 사상과 「진괘」는 ‘두려움’이라는 공통적인 매개체를 수양의 출발점으로 삼는다. 그 선후 관계를 따지면 우레로 인한 두려움이 발생하고, 그 두려움을 지켜나가는 것이 경의 수양이 된다. 이것은 자연현상에 대한 경외심이 경 수양을 가능하게 하는 원인 중 하나가 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 「진괘」는 우레의 두려움이 인간 세상을 태평하게 만든다고 말한다. 이것은 인간의 도덕적 두려움이 인간을 수양하게 하고, 수양을 완성한 인간들이 조화로운 공동체를 형성하기 때문이다. 경 사상 또한 마찬가지이다. 경은 두려움과 삼가는 마음으로 시작되며, 엄숙한 행동을 통해 수양을 완성한다. 그리고 경을 통한 수양의 완성은 인간 사회의 조화로운 운용을 가능하게 한다. 이것은 「진괘」의 괘·효사가 내용적 측면뿐 아니라 그 지향하는 부분에서도 경 사상과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 확인할 수 있는 부분이다.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the connection between Juyeok(『周易』) ‘Jin trigram(「震卦」)’ and ‘Gyeong(敬)’ theory. ‘Gyeong’ is a core concept that is indispensable in Confucian self-cultivation theory. ‘Gyeong’ presides over the human mind and regulates the body, penetrating the beginning and end of self-cultivation. The final goal of this ‘Gyeong’ is to bring a human being to the state of sage and harmonize the community. Fear is the original mental attitude of humanity which enables the cultivation of ‘Gyeong’. It does not just mean fear, but rather moral fear. Human beings look back on their minds and behaviors with moral fear, and always guard against falling in the wrong direction. The Jin trigram of Juyeok speaks about the fear caused by thunder. Thunder is a natural phenomenon that threatens humans. Humans reflect on themselves by substituting the feelings of fear through natural phenomena with moral fear. Thunder’s role is to arouse human moral fear. As such, ‘Gyeong(敬)’ theory and ‘Jin trigram(「震卦」)’ use the common medium of 'fear' as the starting point for self-cultivation. If you follow the stern relationship, you will experience fear due to thunder, and keeping that fear will be the cultivation of ‘Gyeong’. This shows that awe of natural phenomena can be one of the causes of the cultivation of ‘Gyeong’. ‘Jin trigram’ says that the fear of thunder makes the human world peaceful. This is because the moral fear of humanity cultivates human beings, and the human beings who complete the cultivation make a harmonious community. The same goes for ‘Gyeong’, which begins with fear and careful mind, and completes self-cultivation through solemn action. The completion of self-cultivation through ‘Gyeong’ enables the harmonious operation of human society. This is the part that
