The functions and roles of universities are required to change due to rapid social changes and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The government is conducting a basic competency assessment of universities, and universities are aiming to cultivate talented people according to the needs of modern society. Based on the characteristics of each university, core competencies are set and the curriculum is reorganized to implement at competency-based curriculum. This study identifies the effects and improvements of core-competency education through an analysis of the learning performance of students who took an English conversation class at K University, which set and implemented core competencies. We would like to find out an effective direction for general English education based on core competencies that meets the needs of learners and develops the intended talents of universities. To this end, this study compared and analyzed learning outcomes using a preand post-test design, and reviewed them in detail in each academic field. In addition, we analyzed ‘Reasons for Studying English’ and ‘Satisfaction with English Conversation classes’ by academic field to uncover problems and suggest a direction for general English education.
