이 논문의 목적은 전후 북한에서 구축된 ‘수평적 격자’의 이완이 북한 사회에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 미시공간의 변화를 중심으로 분석하는 것이다. 한국전쟁이 휴전의 형태로 종결된 이후, 북한 사회는 제레미벤담이 제시했던 판옵티콘(panopticon)과 같은 사회통제체제 하에 놓이게 된다. 북한의 사회공간은 물리적 조건뿐만 아니라 정치, 경제, 사회의 영역에서 수직적인 통제와 수평적인 단절의 구조를 강화해왔다. 이 논문은 북한의 사회통제가 갖는 특징 중 수평적 단절의 구조, 즉 수평적 ‘연결’을 가로막는 다양한 형태의 ‘격자’들이 형성되고 이완되는 과정을 추적하였다. 전후 북한에서 구축된 수평적 격자는 한반도 휴전체제의 억압성으로부터 재생산되었으며 사람과 물자, 그리고 정보의 수평적 이동을 단절하는 사회통제 기제로 자리 잡았다. 그러나 1990년대 중반의 경제 위기는 북한 사회의 유동성을 확장시키며 수평적 격자를 넘어선 새로운 변화를 가져왔다. 첫째, 경제 위기의 충격은 북한 사회에서 전에 없던 시장의 확장과 그로 인한 사적 네트워크의 확장을 가져왔다. 둘째, 미시공간에서 국가의 하급 관리들이 포함된 행위자간 공생관계가 형성되었다. 마지막으로, 수평적 격자가 이완되면서 수직적 통제의 억압성이 강화되는 결과를 가져왔다.

This paper analyzes how ‘horizontal lattice’ was formed through the Korean War and how it changed after the economic crisis in the mid-1990s, focusing on the micro-space of North Korean society. Since the Korean War ended in the form of a cease-fire, North Korea's society will be placed under the same social control system as the Panopticon proposed by British philosopher Jeremy Bentham. North Korea's post-war social control system blocked horizontal movements of residents, supplies and information. Such a horizontal disconnection is the result of a special historical event called the Korean War. Kim Il-sung established a different repressive social control system in the process of rebuilding the country that was destroyed after the war and purging the transfer forces. In the process, North Korea's social space has internalized the structure of vertical one-sided control and horizontal disconnection. The economic crisis in the mid-1990s brought about the following changes in micro-space in North Korean society. First, the relaxation of the horizontal lattice has led to the expansion of private networks in micro-space. Second, symbiotic relationships between citizens were formed at the base level in society, and some behaviors have become as social norms. Third, the relaxation of the horizontal lattice and the expansion of the private network in micro-space have led to the strengthening of the nation's repressive control mechanism.
